I don't get in here much, cause I don't listen to anything too interesting, and am largely stuck in my musical tastes. For no particular reason, or at least none that bears relevance, I was in a mood for some Eve6 on the way home (remember the late 90's? just a random word and a number, voila! Band name GOLD!) Youtubed the hell out of it on the drive (yay voice searching!), then got in the door and pulled out their sophomore effort, 2000's Horrorscope. This was the backing soundtrack and default go-to for the most carefree 18 months of my life. Where the question of "career" was near irrelevant compared to "what are we drinking tonight." (the difference in lifestyle clearly illustrated by me sending the Renchlette away for the umpteenth time while I try and knock out a 5 minute post)

It's got a very bouncing rock sound throughout, near pop-y, reminiscent of just bouncing up and down like you're jumping rope at shows, but the lyrical content is amazing. It's fair to say most of their songs combine the density of Barenakedladies with the emotion of Rise Against.

Anyway, I encourage you to dust them off and take a listen, and then maybe check out their newest album out, perhaps ironically, about 18 months ago. In fact, I think I'm gonna go download that one now...

So I binge-listen. I focus too much, just like on everything else. Somewhere back in this thread, years ago, I posted a bunch of Filter links.

Now it is 2014, and a fantastic new album came out last year. I ignored it at first, but it is actually full of meat.

The industrially astute will notice a common element here with the NIN love ballad, "Closer".

Can't go wrong with filter, and yeah, while age has obscured their radio presence, not at all their talent.

Listening to 'Take that knife out of my back' carefully, there is yet another element of 'Closer' lurking.

Conclusion: The songs 'Closer' and 'Hey Man Nice Shot' had sex, and this is their love-child. Works for me!

In 2009, I had the opportunity to sing with Eric Whitacre, my favorite contemporary composer. I was able to sing this song during a practice preceeding its debut seen here: http://youtu.be/MI_SdYb2HXo

Then, Whitacre tweets out a link to this: http://youtu.be/WHxgXfRCLeQ

He worked with the band to hash out this arrangement.

I'm working on something, and while doing that, need something to occupy the bits of my brain that aren't occupied by working on what I'm working on.
So I've got music in the background.
I've found that the background music that is not unpleasant to listen to, yet not so great it would distract me, coming right out of internet radio is ... bluegrass.
Though I may have to find something else, it did just slightly distract me just there. When they played an inappropriately jovial, bluegrass version of "City of New Orleans". And ... it wasn't really so awful to listen to. Not good good, but good. Guess it's just damn hard to make that song sound bad.

Pure Guava, and Chocolate and Cheese are two of my favorite albums. I was saddened by their breakup, but am ever hopeful of a reunion at some point in the future, 'cause their live shows are pretty kick ass.

Been listening to St. Vincent lately. Love her guitar work and how it contrasts/blends with her vocals.

I saw in her bio that she sprung from your neck of the woods, and was wondering if you'd ever crossed paths.

Her guitar riffs were what convinced me to dig a little deeper, I know just enough to recognize she's got some real skill. That combined with the way she fucks around with time signatures makes for a uniquely appealing sound. I've just scratched the surface so far, anything of hers I should be sure to not miss?

I went to a festival of international music and culture. I really just went for the exotic food (the chilli sauce they put on cooked banana in East Africa is demonic).

1) while I like some nice Cumbia, "Cumbia-Fusion" made by locals isn't. Not until the saxophonist stopped trying to make his instrument sound like a shehnai during the start of his solo and, instead, started jamming something that would have uncannily matched Mr. Willis trying to pick between the baseball bat and the katana.
2) even the organists of contemporary Anatolian folk-groups want to be Ray Manzarek, apparently. A perfectly reasonable aspiration, I find. This one, once the percussionists took a break, did a pretty good job of it.

Why did you people not tell me about the awesomeness that is Ty Segall?!? (I'm looking at you motorpsycho67). Oh yeah, i wasn't around... well i forgive you then. I'm getting all caught up on him now & his what, like thirty bands? Also, just for me the Oblivians got back together and made a new record because they knew I'd be needing a new oblivians record. What a guys! It doesn't top their 90's stuff but then how could it? They'd have to exhume Elvis, pull some voodo shit and play with him live on the moon to do that. "Call the Police" is catchy and they say "zydeco" in it a lot. I like the song "Em"- it's nicer than most of their songs with girls' names, I bet Emily is a really swell person. And their cover of "lovin' cup" is wound up super tight. FUCKING NICE, GUYS. now tour. please?

That fella just recently blipped on my radar. He played a festival I worked (Coachella), but I missed him. His set was too early in the day (I was working the night shift and was sleeping when he was on). Henry Rollins seems to be a big fan. You should catch Henry's show on Sunday nights on KCRW. Tune in via the interwebz or I think it's podcasted as well so you can listen to archived shows too. He be playin some good chit mang...
