shameless thievery

Postby wheezy e » Fri Apr 04, 2014 11:34 am

In the interest of keeping myself busy through the winter and putting something on my bare walls I decided to copy some art. First I thought it would be funny to make myself copies of works I like using nothing but crayola crayons. I realized this was a bit ambitious a few hours into into it and gave up on Picasso's "crucifiction" which should have been dead simple - mostly solid colors & easily defined shapes. Maybe I'll finish it later but crayons are made for four year olds for a reason, they just do one thing - blob that one color more or less where you point them and mostly they just make you want to throw a temper tantrum. So I dug up some old (but decent) markers someone had given me and decided I'd copy some portraits of pre-war blues artists from a set of collector cards that R. Crumb put out. I'm pretty stoked with the results. I used a drafting (scaling) ruler to upsize the outlines finding the center & working outward since I didn't want to put a graph on the actual card. A little more tedious than graphing but not much. If I do more, which I intend I'm going to cut the time into about 1/8 by finding a copying machine, blowing up the image and tracing. markers are a set of 10 warm greys with the 20% missing + one 60% cool gray and a few widths of black line markers. Check it out:

A little crude in spots (lips, nose, teeth) on this first one - Reverend Gary Davis:

I used a larger paper on this latest on & included his name the same way Crumb put it on the card, I still need to put some definition on his jacket. - Rube Lacey:

Wow. DAMN!
If I draw a stick figure, nobody recognizes it. Those look pretty damn fine!

Nice work! I can't draw a straight line with a ruler.

OMG that brought up long repressed memories from school.

you may be interested in picking up a cheap opaque projector, like one of these . the little one is only like $30.00 or so.

Nice work !
I find projectors frustrating and difficult to work with, I'd rather blow up the image to the final size with a scanner and printer (or xerox) and use a light table, or just a plexiglasss plate over a light source ... under a blanket .
I'm not really from around here.

That pantograph is beautifully simple. Leave it to the Greeks... I was thinking about picking up a projector, i uzed one that my mom had when i was in highh school, worked well enough. Now i'm slightly obsessed after seeing this couple weeks ago:

Basically, you can use a projected image and a mirror to color match as well...
