Need assistance finding a story/book.

Postby red » Fri Jan 19, 2018 7:25 am

A portion of a book, maybe short story, popped in my head while I was watching my daughter get a blood transfusion. *

In the story, a person is going through a hospital and there is someone (a solider?) completely obscured by bandages, with two tubes running out. One bottle is catching fluid, the other is putting it back in. The narrator remarks that when one bottle is full and the other is empty, they swap them and that there may not be a person under there at all.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? It's driving me nuts and my Google-Fu has turned up squat.

* Daughter is doing well but will probably need a few more before we're in the clear.

best suggestion I've got, as it doesn't sound familiar to me:

a) best wishes for your daughter, may her recovery be swift and complete.
b) what you describe, it doesn't sound unfamiliar. But that's as close as I can get.
The idea, though. It kinda makes me think "Vonnegut". On further examination, a scene like that wouldn't have surprised me in the "Catch-22" movie (never read the book). Or maybe a side-joke Hawkeye and Trapper make in very early M*A*S*H (or in the movie).
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.

Everything he said. And yeah, my immediate thought was Catch-22, though it could well be Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five."

EDIT: Yep, it's Catch-22:

It was definitely written, not TV/Film. Although, it could be some chunk of a hyper realistic dream I had in the past and my brain is interpreting it as a memory.

That ol' brain can be a sneaky sumbitch.

I'll cross post this to FB and see what it turns up.

You two were correct, it was Catch-22. Thanks!
