Tag Game

Postby MATPOC » Sat Dec 03, 2011 6:59 pm

For few month now I have been playing the Tag game over on Ducatista forum, I have got new kind of respect for some of the members over there, some have gone on 300 mile rides looking for tags when I didn't expect them to go a mile past Starbucks.

Over few month I have played few tags and even met up with a bunch of taggers from another forums, I think ADV and NER, those guys are serious about the game, talked about tagging though the entire breakfast!

Have had some good rides and took nice pics, today was no different. The tag was Covered Bridge, quick search revealed location of the only covered bridge in RI.

http://riroads.com/ri/covered_bridge.htm

I especially wanted to get this one because it reminded me of Dirty weekend and all those bridges which I think no longer exist (Big floods at the end of simmer reportedly took them all down) Ride over was too easy so I took some back roads, got lost for a while, rode dirt, powerlines, backyards and driveways, finally made it to the bridge

than on to a new tag, first I was gonna tag this Dam, but it was just to easy

so I went little further, few miles away there is a man made waterfall, lovely spot to watch the sunset

not sure how many miles but I left with a full tank and came back on reserve couple hours later, had a great time, love that game!!

You've told me about this in person, but you should explain for everyone else what the game is and how its played.

I know of this game, and it looks like a fun thing. Geographic separation might make it difficult for some ootmiks to participate, but I bet some kind of cross country tag could be cobbled together. And much could be done regionally where there is a strong UTMC presence.

And what precisely are we talking about?

Not many covered bridges by me. Lotsa graffiti though! In fact, I saw a graffito on my mailbox yesterday. Do I get extra tag points for that? Graffito?

I've read some of the Tag stuff over at the .ms board. Still not entirely sure the rules. I guess the first poster got some shots of a covered bridge, and the next guy has to get a similar picture as well as something for the next person to get, and so forth. Problem is, what happens when two hundred people get pictures of bridges not realizing the game already moved on to tattoo parlors without front windows? And all two hundred riders have different new targets? Is there a point system? Does everyone have to start from ground zero with the goddamed covered bridge?

I will explain, however thought it was the common game on other board and everyone knew what it was all about.

As Hank mentioned, someone starts by posting a picture of the bike by a covered bridge (example, can post whatever you want as long as you rode there)

Rules stipulate that it can not be a "file photo" although no one on Ducati site enforces time stamps because it can be altered, it's an honor system.

So all players seek out the covered bridge to tag, goal it take picture of your bike by the bridge and on the way back you need to take a new Tag, for example a tractor.

The one who posts the pictures first has the tag, they say got to ride faster if you want to win but in reality the tags stand for few days sometimes especially now in winter when most bikes are safely tucked away.

So now new tag is a tractor and everyone is looking for tractor till someone posts up pictures of the old tag (now tractor) and new tag whatever you want it to be.

I tagged an observatory once, it was nearly a week till someone found another one to tag. There were days when I went out looking for tag and when I get there would check forum from my phone and realize the tag has changed, and then it changes again so I just keep looking for things all day, end up returning with 200 miles on a clock and several good pictures.

rules are explained here

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/11-ducati-m ... -game.html

however I think ADV forum rules are more strict, it's a fun game and rules are made to keep it interesting. No one wins anything other than a good days ride, good picture and a good story like the one I posted.

I tried to start same game on Hawk forum but there aren't enough players there.
Ducati site has something like 30,000 active members and only 30 or so are regular contributors.

Sounds pretty cool, Matpoc!

Might we spawn a dedicated sticky/thread and give it a shot here?

I think we'd get some pretty "interesting" results with this lot!

Sounds like a good enough reason to get a bike running again and put some miles on.

The way I understood the game is that someone rides to A, takes picture of bike at A, posts it.

Then someone else must find A, take picture of their bike at A, post it, ride to B, take picture of bike at B, post it. And so on.

The Ducati game only requires you to find something similar to A. That's why I said it might be hard geographically... but if you're only looking for something similar, then that's easier.

I'll take any excuse to go out and hunt down random spots in the world. I like that you just have to find something that matches the tagged item, leaving room for creative interpretation.

My first year on a bike I did the dam tour. A group of folks in OR pick out 20 dams, 10 each in WA and OR, plus four bonus dams in far flung places like BC, MT, ID, and CA. Visit as many as you can over the summer and get a pic of your bike and number card at each one. I put 10k miles on the Guzzi that summer, learned a lot and had some pretty epic rides.

So what's our first target, covered bridge?

Dozer and I were playing the ADVrider version of this game, but kept pissing everybody off by making them go into the scary city. And then I think Dozer got banned or something because somebody thought they were going to get killed or whatever. Rock played for a while too, but I think he was nicer about it.

I like the "similar" site idea. That could be funny.

Covered bridge it is

Yeah, I never actually intended to ride to wherever the fuck you people live and run the risk of meeting any of you in meatspace. Similar is best, although I have no idea how to find a covered bridge in TX, so I'll wait for round #2.

With our geographical disparity the strict version would be awfully exclusive and kind of against the spirit of the UTMC. On the other hand, pissing off the ADDrider crowd is something I can support :) (but they're not really here anyway)

Next up, a giant bronze Lenin.

Giant bronze Lenin's are hard to come by in Texas. How about a nice Stevie Ray Vaughn statue instead?

Now to figure out a way to ride my bike next to the SRV statue....

Doesn't have to be a giant bronze Lenin necessarily, but I'll give extra points for giantness and communistness. Points redeemable in beer if/when we meet in meatspace.

this is where interpretation comes in, if Lenin can't be tagged then you can stipulate "communist" or socialist etc, tough tags (kangaroo for example) are game killer but Lenin is surely interesting

As far as finding tags, Google is your friend, that's how I got Covered bridge and probably half the other tags
