The place to come if you've been with us for years or it's your first time here. General yakking about anything motorcycle related. Think of it as the internet coffeehouse for the UTMC.

If someone can take a picture of their bike next to the Lenin statue in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, in the Tropicana Casino, or on top of a building in New York City, there must be some special prize, right?

What a nice man you are, Calimari. I guess we need to run our antics past you before we do something stupid and find no free beer as a reward, right? Or is the prize of doing something dumb in the act itself?

A dumb act is indeed its own reward. However in instances where I might be fingered as instigator, or co-instigator, without assuming any direct risk myself, I feel it's my duty to offer a little something extra.

Granted, Lenin was a bit of slow starter- I figured somebody from Seattle should get this ball rolling again!

For the next tag, I picked something pretty generic, that might have some fun interpretations:

A dome:

It brought friends:
Image

I wanted to get closer but it would have involved getting my bike over a turnstile and riding across the pedestrian bridge you see in the right of the first picture there. I had to ride down a bicycle path just to get these shots, but at least from there I could make a quick getaway if need be.

For your next mission, UTMC, should you choose to accept it, you must bring us a castle:

Yeah, little hiccup there. It's not often you find statues of communist (ok, actually he wasn't a communist himself but a leader of the revolution that gave us communist China) revolutionary leaders (on this continent) so I was kind of stoked to have an answer to that one, but too late. Of course, me and the good doctor have a history* so maybe he should have been disqualified anyway.

*I borrowed the Doctor's master mold and took it to a concert once, long before I knew where the actual bronze was. It had been left to decay in a refuse heap behind an industrial street in the town I grew up in, Georgetown (no relation).

Perfect day to be off early...

We have an entire game preserve of giant crane beasties in Seattle:

Since the lighthouse I was trying for was seasonally closed, we'll have to settle for this simple tag:

So, thanks for the idea of this TAG game. It inspired me to head out on a chilly mission today.

First off:

Image

Now, where to find my new tag?

I did a google search for "PA ghost towns", remembering something about a ghost town way up north. I didn't want to head that far out, but it got me surfing to some related sites like ForgottenPA, Abandoned But Not Forgotten, and some others. I came up w/ a couple of spots I'd like to try for.

First was this nifty bit of abandoned machinery. Some massive flywheel/generator at the Phoenix Iron plant in Phoenixville, PA. I rode all around the outskirts of the site, but couldn't find a way in.

Image

<small>View <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&amp;msid=217231486979857305426.0004b5945f8ad760d4e9c&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;vpsrc=1&amp;ll=40.133948,-75.524944&amp;spn=0,0&amp;source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">Phoenix Iron</a> in a larger map</small>

If you zoom in, you can see the shadow of that wheel... Anyway, I tried coming in from the west, but there's a fence up blocking a bridge onto the site. Went around and across the river and tried taking that trail that comes in from the northwest off of High St. Got about an 1/8th mile down the trail and came upon another fence. The fence was all kicked to shit and I could have gotten through easily on foot. But no way to get the bike in w/o some bolt cutters. I rode all around the place trying to find another way in, but couldn't find a way down there. There's an abandoned set of train tracks that gets into the site, but I wasn't brave enough to try it w/o walking it first...

So, on to my second intended spot: Frick's Lock

This is what is supposed to be there. A handful of abandoned homes/buildings/ghost town:

Image

Image

Image

I rode down there and couldn't find any way to continue, and no sign of the abandoned town. Looking at the map again, it looks like I fucked up and missed a turn. I took Sanatoga road to it's end, and didn't make the turn onto Frick's Lock Road (didn't see that sign, either, or I would have tried it):

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Frick's+Lock,+PA&aq=0&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Frick's+Lock,+Pennsylvania&t=h&vpsrc=6&ll=40.222239,-75.597267&spn=0.005734,0.00912&z=16&output=embed"></iframe>

Oh well, I'll try again later...

So, what's my final TAG? How about a Nuclear Power Plant?

Can't figure out how to put pics on here again. I think it is my blog preventing me from doing is easily.

Hit Surry Nuclear Plant today. Bummer is they won't let you go in to get a good pic. I did sneak around a service road and get a pic of one of the domes on a reactor.

Also, hit a place called Bacon's Castle which is right down the street. Not really a Castle, but the story on why it is called a castle is keeping with the tradition of the UTMC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon's_Castle

Unfortunately I have to pimp my meager excuse for a blog in order for you to see any pics. Sorry. I will not sell your info to commercial parties.

Holy shit, scooped by Gazza! A fine day for riding to nuclear power plants it seems. Question, are you sending us after castles again, or just grabbing one for yourself?

I also went and visited a nuclear power plant this afternoon, Pickering Nuclear. Great minds etc…

Following the signs for the visitor centre, I came to this fine welcome.
Image

Undeterred, I circled, looking for a suitable vista
Image

Image

Eventually, I found I could just walk around the barbed wire fence which ended at the water and get a good look while standing in Lake Ontario (actually quite a nice beach)
Image

They got cameras, and then they got CAMERAS
Image

They also had one of these on site, in case the whole power the atom thing didn't work out for them I suppose
Image

On the way back to my motorcycle, an official looking suv swerved across the road to block my path. The man inside wore a uniform adorned with patches reading "nuclear security", and he was armed. He asked me if that was my bike, and I thought I was about to get hassled (or worse) for probing the entrances and shooting photos, but instead… he wanted to ask about my tires. We talked about rubber and asphalt and sand, as motorcyclists everywhere do when they meet.

For the next tag I was going to submit
Image
A SIGN OF PROTEST (pun optional) that I came across on my further explorations. I don't know what we're supposed to be hunting now, you guys figure it out.

Also, Gazza's blog is great, youse should go there.

Above is Concorde G-BOAG (Alpha Golf). Alpha Golf made the last commercial transatlantic flight of any Concorde (JFK -> LHR), and then made the last US flight of a Concorde ever, from NY to Boeing Field in Seattle where it lives today. This was the 2nd to last Concorde flight ever- the last one was another aircraft, landing a few weeks later back at LHR.

OLD TAG: End of an Era/:Last of the Mohicans - I offer a combo of a retired bomber squadron which is also representative of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base.

Image

The airbase has been gone for about 15 years. It had a huge impact on this small city. Now many of the buildings and facilities are being used again, my wife's employer is in one of the old administration buildings.

NEW TAG: PRISION!

Does a gypsy wagon count?

Not sure if a wagon counts as a vehicle, no matter how utilitarious.

If not, I'll go look for something self-propelled. :)

Dammit #1! I've been searching all over for a whackadoo utility vehicle. A few years ago, those minitrucks were all over the place for sale. Now I can't find them anywhere. Only saw a Mitsubishi near the Vermont border, but it was on the road, on the move, and going the opposite direction. :x

Dammit #2! I've got the perfect "disobeying posted signage" tag, but the bike is currently not running as I wait for a valve cover gasket! :x

Ok, either someone took pity and let me run with this (in which case you'll be sorely disappointed), or no one wants to play this game.

Anyway... Disobeying posted signage:

Image

Suck it, authorities!

Now, ADVRider Tag O Rama rules (at least NH rules) state that you have 36 hours to post the new tag. Same goes here? If no, you may (politely, I'm fragile) tell me to fuck off.

No way that bike weighs over 3 tons.

I don't know if there has been any stipulation as to how soon you have to post the next one, but 36 hrs seems fair enough to me.
