The new BMW airhead...

Postby DerGolgo » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:43 am

So, apparently, BMW built a prototype for a new boxer that may (or may not) come to market in the near future.
They seem to have noticed that, a decade ago, everyone got hot and bothered about "retro". So...
See for yourself:

Because "let's fuck with everyone!" they gave the prototype to a custom shop in Japan.
In case you are wondering: No, that engine apparently isn't much customized. It IS that large. It's 1,800cc!
And yes, it is air-cooled. Which would explain why they made it that ginormous, so that they can get sufficient power for modern traffic even while running at low-ish compression, and keeping the mix lean and emissions-friendly.

Heck. They didn't just go back to air-cooled OHV from 25 years ago. They doubled up and went back a full 50 years - look at those pushrod tubes! That camshaft is above the engine! It hadn't been there since the /5 came on in 1969.
Which is what suggests to me this might be genuine. The engine case looks rather /5 or /6 maybe, but the camshaft is in the entirely wrong place for that.

No detailed specs had been released at the time of publication. I would suspect, however, that the production bike will have fuel-injection.
Here's the article, from December 6th, so it's probably not an April-Fools:
https://www.tourenfahrer.de/artikel/neu ... ventilers/

I will try and find out more about this Monsterboxer.

Return of the Cafe Racer (clicky) have more photos.

They call it a "concept engine". So handing such to a custom shop as market-research sounds fairly canny.

Could I still ride, I think I'd like the idea of knowing that a nice, simple, air-cooled, OHV boxer with all the displacement would be an option.

^^The front of the engine case looks like it may be the oil-cooler. FUCK. Can they make it more "OHFUCKINGWOW!"?

Not saying the rest of the engine is pretty. But that oil-cooler sure is.

Won't happen. The reason H-D is having to move away from Air Cooled engines is because part of the Emissions requirements is "Noise Pollution". H-D could meet the stringent Exhaust Pipe standards, but it was the sound levels that they couldn't meet. People thing that the exhaust note is the issue, but when you cancel out the exhaust note, you still have the metallic clatter (which let's admit it, we love) is still there.

IF BMW is able to get the engine to meet standards, then you can pretty much guarantee they paid someone off.

I recall similar confounders had beset the big four, when they wished to sell big singles. I've seen may a rattling metal with stabilizing metal ridges and bits of rubber.
Then there is material choice. Aluminium, surely.
But.
This is going to be a massively massive engine. I can imagine someonene signing off on slightly heavier alloys that have sound-dampening characteristics. Perhaps not high-carbon cast-iron.
I'm not writing it off yet.

This is what happens when Indian poaches your best designer, and you replace the budget you spent on trying to keep him around, on Harley Execs so you can boost your profits.

Oh FFS.

Well. Could I still ride, the idea of a brand new air-cooled, OHV boxer, with greater displacement than most passenger cars (over here) would excite me a bit. Definitely more exciting than any oilhead or the present crop of boxers.

I have no doubt. And I'm sure it would make me giggle, also, could I and would I ride it.
But I personally have a soft spot for insane engineering solutions.
"Emissions regulations won't let us get enough power out of an aircooled engine."
"Make it bigger then."
"We can, but we still won't..."
"I said bigger!!"
"We can make it bigger than any other, we still won't..."
"You're not listening to me. I said BIGGER!"

Test riding one of these would be something I'd travel to do, I believe.

Why shouldn't it?
Once you lean the mixture out enough, flame temperature eventually decreases. That's what many modern engines do hack the emissions. Lean it out to where the nitrous-oxide curve goes down again, which it does when the flame temperature decreases, obviously.
You wouldn't get the power you might get with a water-cooled engine, which'd let you play with a slightly richer mixture. But by heck, I do think they can hack it.
OR, who knows. BMW recently introduced a passenger car with water-injection. Seriously, water-injection, akin to the water-methanol injection in WW2 aircraft engines. This new automotive system will even recover water from the exhaust pipe.
I don't expect such a recovery system on a bike, but, who knows. In some way or another, some BMW riders may have to get used to buying a bottle of distilled water at the gas station, every time they fill up. Wouldn't be the worst way of preventing knocking in a hot-running engine.

As for noise emissions. There are ways to silence those fins, keep them from reverberating. Metal bits connecting fins at right angles, bits of rubber, the right alloy. I suspect those cylinders are aluminium - but I do not know it. This will be aimed at the cruiser market, it appears, and there, weight isn't quite as critical as it is in sportsbikes, is it. What I'm saying: cast iron, maybe?
Perhaps in composite with some other material. But cast iron is great at absorbing noise, because of the bits of graphite between the metal crystals. When they were already building all the other bits of the engine out of aluminium, they kept making diesel cylinder heads out of cast iron. Mostly because that was the best way they had to dampen the head-splitting noise the auto-ignition makes.

that, or you just trick the ecu to cheat on the test (which what the VW reference was about but it's less funny when you have to explain it)

I knew what the reference was about. But with the ongoing investigations (last cheater revealed: Mercedes Benz), I doubt BMW would try and do something like that. An air-cooled motor, these days, will probably get even closer scrutiny than others.

A small sacrifice I'd be willing to make.
At least the rest of the motor looks proper. The top-mounted pushrod tubes return after a brief 50 year intermission!
