Talk to me About Bluetooth Headsets

Postby Bigshankhank » Sun Nov 11, 2018 4:19 pm

So after riding with the wife this morning, she mentioned that a nice anniversary gift would be for us to get Bluetooth headsets for our helmets. Other than the obvious Sena, what else is a good option out there?

I'm really curious about this too. I'm fuckin' sick to death of fussing with earbuds when I put on a helmet. There MUST be a better solution.

I have a pair of the SENA SMH5, they're pretty good but the newer models have better speakers and more bells/whistles. My wife and I used them on a few trips, neither of us were very chatty but it was nice to communicate with words instead of hand gestures. However, when I rode to Do0M, a certain person talked my ears off the whole time. So, even batteries on the old model will get you from Indy to Pittsburgh on a full charge!

Yeah we've been looking at the SMH10 for a bit better range and supposedly much better acoustics on the earpiece.

Ended up finding a good deal on a pair of Scala Cardo G9x.

Looking forward to getting some real world use out of it.

Everyone keeps jumping back and fourth, I seem to lag behind or stay ahead.
I had Scala G4 for many years, everyone got Sena but I stuck with scala, till it died from simple gasket failure.
Got Sena 20S and that was great till i left it in the hotel charging. it had one flaw: stuck out and I either hit it with my shoulder and press a button or it hits me because it sticks out, also WIND NOISE
Switched to Sena 10R, every bit as good, flush mount, no noise, BUT can't listen to the misuc and GPS at the same time, or intercom and GPS, I forget, basically no multitasking but it's on my dirt helmet so no problem there, also no fear of broken collarbone

Everyone seems to have jumped back to Cardo for their newest mesh intercom while I found good deal on Sena 30K (also mesh) to goon my K1R, but now I'm odd man out without Cardo, whatever... on a plus side: I have spare helmet mounts left over from 20S so I can swap one unit between helmets, pretty sure they are all same, my kid has a helmet with a mount so I can just wear dirt lid when I'm riding and plug 30K in his

Sena 20 and 30 have the plug for auxiliary headphones, but I really wish I had that on my 10R because dirt helmet is so fucking noisy I have to ride with ear plugs if I take it on trips, having headphones that plug in the ears would have been great when I went to FL and spent 2500 miles listening to the wind howl

That’s an interesting point since decades of construction noise and gunfire in addition to wind noise from riding a Sportster a half helmet have wrecked my ears with deafening tinnitus so I wear plugs every time I ride now, and I am worried how that will affect the usability of the Cardo.

That's the main reason I'm not interested in a bt headset. I use my earplugs as much as possible because the helmet noise is just obnoxious.

I can't remember which Sena I had, but got it about 3 years ago... either way I got the helmet mount that had the 3.5 mm headphone jack, just plugged in my earbuds. Now I just use Eaos SlimBuds for music. I've read in documentation that they're able to communicate with other bluetooth headsets, but never tried it.
There, I said it.

Did I mention that I got a 30K? Used it in Cali, could not hear SHIT... I'm gonna try spacers for the speakers, they seem too far away from my ears. Sena provides foam spacers that can be easily installed/removed, since speakers are attached with velcro and spacers are basically foam circle with velcro on both sides.

One of my friends just got Cardo Packtalk slim 2 pack, I may try one of his sets to compare, need to buy another helmet so I don't have to keep swapping headsets :)

I finally got these installed in mine and the wife's helmets, but have yet to link the headsets and use them. Baby steps.
