I do understand why Suarez did it, but it's the cultural gap that I don't think I can ever understand. From his side of the sea he did all he could to keep his team in the competition and is a hero. The way I was taught to play the game was to use your hand is cheating and against the rules. You just don't do it.

Yes, Suarez was penalized according to the rules of the sport but I believe that the rules have not changed as rapidly as the game has changed. Different cultures play the game differently and view the rules in a different way. Some players see the rules as binding. Some see them as obstacles to try and get around (ie: hand of dog).

There has been a lot of talk this WC that goal line technology must be introduced, and now (after Suarez) some people calling for penalty goals to be allowed (a la rugby). When you look at the way some important decisions and matches have played out then you can't really ignore such calls.

Spain shut down Germany and didn't take the bait--they were rarely suceptible to the fast break.

As for the final, I'm a fatalist. I've always liked Holland--the people, their temperament, and liked Dutch soccer since the time of Cruyff and Neeskins. I even saw Cruyff play a couple games when he was with the LA Aztecs.

That said, I still think Spain's gonna take it. They play very well as a team.

Love to see the Orange win it though--would be really cool.

Drop Dead Fred

Yeah, the Ljungberg thing. As short explanation goes like this:

That guy was fucking poison.

I'm ok with primadonnas if they deliver the goods, those being goals, assists, a defensive wall (although I can't think of large number of defensive primadonnas), or just plain leadership. This year his contribution was nil, and his constant whining/bitching/complaining about the officiating, mostly to the officials during matches, not only cost him a call here and there, but cost the whole team. You could see it happening on the field, and once it started, things got immediately tougher. To be fair, he did get fouled (actual, hard fouls, not dives) a LOT, but he just responded to the poor officiating competely the wrong way.

The moment he got benched the team started coming together and Fredy Montero suddenly started scoring goals and making assists. They started playing good football, together. Again I can't talk of unamed results of unamed side but :D :D :D :D :D :D

Then Mgmt moved his locker over into the corner and gave Miguel Montano his spot. Then he developed some mysterious ankle injury that happened to coincide with the upcoming Euro transfer window. Then he started training on his own instead of with the team. Then he was gone.

He wanted to re-up his contract for two more years, but the FO first said they didn't do that until after the season was over, and then they just plainly said they weren't interested and he was free to go to Europe if he could make a deal. But he couldn't, as the European teams would rather wait for the season to end and his contract to be up so they could get him on a free transfer.

He's only signed with Chicago for the rest of the season and then I'd be surprised if he was still in the US after that. They can have him. Like I said, poison.

Funny note: Chicago comes to Seattle to play on the 28th. Guess who's picture is on the ticket (in rave green) for that match?

So now that the unbeaten streak is over I can again talk of my beloved Sounders.

An update on the Freddie Ljungberg situation:

Saturday the Chicago Fire came to Qwest:

Sounders 2 - 1 Fire (straight SHITE PK!)

Best moment other than the winning goal 2 minutes in to stoppage time: Fredy Montero coming up and laying out Ljungberg from behind with a hard shoulder and chop across at the ball (so as not to get the straight red) It was as intentional a foul as is possible. Of course, Ljungberg immediately started crying like a bitch. Montero wouldn't have even been carded if he hadn't argued with the Ref over the foul.

Watched 35 minutes of the Hammers/Devils match Honestly, West Ham looked terrible. I hope the FO nips the Grant experiment in the bud before too much of the schedule passes. Bob Bradley woud even be a better choice.

SOUNDERS WIN THE US OPEN CUP AGAIN!!!!!

Post by Drift » Wed Oct 06, 2010 2:47 pm

Doing what no other MLS team has been able to do in the 96 years of the tournament's existence, Seattle Sounders FC repeated as Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Champions!

At a nearly sold out Qwest Field, the Sounders defended their 2009 Open Cup Championship against a tough Columbus Crew, winning 2-1 on two Sanna Nyassi goals.

The Seattle fanbase, much maligned by unamed rival clubs as band-wagon "customers", opened up an Costco warehouse-sized can of SHUT THE FUCK UP and showed up in force for a Tuesday night, non-league match, shattering attendance records for the nearly century old tourney and rocking Qwest as never before for soccer. The old record of 19,164 set in 1996 for a match between the Chicago Fire and the Miami Fusion, paled in comparison to the 31,311 that showed up loaded :) for bear.

I attended, accompanied by my lovely wife as the night was also our 8th anniversary (did I mention ossem wife?). Stacius was also observed in glorious rapture over the historic win.

Hate WHUFC's new owners. Never had a lot of hope for the shits.

Hate WHUFC's idea of appointing a manager. Just as things were coming together under Zola, they sack him and hire a gobshite.

Not that I'm blaming Avram Grant. I blame the new owners trying to impose themselves on the club instead of having WHU's best interests at heart.

It's brilliant coming into Christmas bottom of the table...

I would love it if Di Canio came in to the backroom staff. He definitely has a lot to offer the club and might help inject a bit of passion. First things first; Grant has to go, and now that Sam Allardyce has been given the arse from Blackburn (Lord only knows why!?!), the club needs to move quick and secure his services. It could happen...

On this, the evening before the MLS season gets underway here in Seattle, I am cautiously optimistic about my beloved Sounders FC. In preseason I've seen some beautiful (if not effective) football being played by the local side, I generally feel good about the players we've brought in and have a high level of confidence that with a little luck, we'll be able to challenge for the top spot come the end.

On the other side of the pond, I'm trying to keep my wits about me as Leeds is sitting in 5th in The Championship (2 points out of 3rd) and getting tighter and tighter as the weeks go by. They're playing well and with some perserverance and discipline could see promotion to the Premiership after only 1 year back at the Championship level. Not sure if that's the best thing for them in the long run, but would I turn it away? Oh hell NO!

Johnny, I really do hope the Hammers get it together in this last stretch. I'd hate to see them relegated. They sure took it to Stoke last week.

Well, everything stateside is underway and my boys on this side of the pond are having a good run to start the season. The Sounders have been dealing with a shit ton of injuries but the starters are finally mending and getting some time together so I expect things to actually get better!?! Knock on some serious wood there. Oh and LA and P*rtland suck, so there's that.

Johnny, good to see the Hammers on the up. Hopefully next year will be Leeds turn. The new gaffer has turned the box upside down and is shaking out all the dead wood, but I don't see the ownership giving him enough money to really drop coin on some big talent. Warnock seems like a clever fellow, I hope he truly is.

So, been a little glum lately regarding the football. My Sounders are winless (in league play, but got a stellar one - the only one so far in the CONCACAF Champions League) this season and Leeds is hovering 5 points above the drop.

Sounders have been trying to up their firepower and midfield solidity, but the restructuring hasn't gone as planned and we have had some horrid results. On the positive side, we did bring aboard Levante/Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins, All Star Veteran DM Shalrie Joseph (MLS) and veteran Liverpool CB Djimi Traore' (yes the one with prettiest own goal in history) but our side hasn't gelled yet. They had better, and fucking sooner than later. There's been calls for our manager to go (utter nonsense) and lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth, followed by lots and lots of gleeful gloating and trollfuckery (spellcheck maintains trollfuckery isn't a word, but fuck you spellcheck, I invented it) by our rivals. We need a win NOW. Unfortunately, tonight we play LigaMX side Santos Laguna...away, in a Champions League tie, the 2nd in a two leg semifinal and are currently down 0-1 on the aggregate. It might not seem that bad, but Santos is notoriously hard to score on at home. Last year we went there with a 2-1 lead and ended up losing on aggregate 3-7 (yeah, they put up SIX at home), doesn't help that Hercules Gomez(former Sounder with a chip on his shoulder) has got a scoring streak going against us, or that the Mexican fans have been outside the Sounders hotel all night banging on drums and blowing horns. Do we have a chance? Well, yeah, even with Oba and Brad Evans out with knocks, it can be done, but honestly it'll take something special not to come home from Mexico with another loss and exit from the tourney. All we have to do is be disciplined on defense, keep a clean sheet and put 2 in the net, simple. That would take us to the final. Someone suggested we move our #1 GK 6ft 5in, Michael Gspurning up front Peter Crouch style (against a very short Mexican team) and let our #2 GK Marcus Hahnemman mind the sticks. Honestly, I would love to see that. I know it's stupid, but I would so love to fuck with Santos. I can just see the look on their faces "Que pasa?!?!". We could just kick balls into the box all night, above their heads and let Cerberus (Gspurning's nickname) head ball after ball at the net. Yeah, it's a pub league ploy, but at this point.....

Anyway, we'll see I guess. Hopefully tomorrow I can ring the victory bell. If not, well.....
