Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Leonard Nimoy passed today...

Post by Rench » Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:32 pm

I can't say I followed him closely, and he didn't have the ubiquitous presence of Shatner or Takei's amazing presence in social media, but by all accounts he was a solid guy. And frankly, he did this, so he must be cool. Safe travels space man.

Mr. Leonard Nimoy was born in 1931. Less than three weeks before the Empire State Building was completed.
Today is, literally, the first day the Empire State stands in a world without Leonard Nimoy.

I'm not grieving, not really. He was an impressive actor who lent his face to an impressive character. He is stamped on pop-culture like few other things. Even people who don't know Trek know Mr. Spock. In large part because Mr. Nimoy did such an outstanding job. He didn't just entertain people, but he touched them, or the Trekkies wouldn't be so obsessed. As far as the arts go, that's a full score, I reckon.
He had a long run, and he saw some stuff. Maybe not a happy life, I don't know, but he lived it, lived it well. Good job, sir.
Just feels weird that he's gone ...

I never knew he directed Three Men And A Baby.
That being said, my 20-something coworker looked at his picture when I mentioned that he had passed, and true to the Youtube generation he actually attempted to show me the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, which of course I have already watched.

Sad to see a person with such a body of work, outstanding, against type, silly, and everything in between pass away, but then it comes for us all.

Godspeed.

Given the convoluted time-space continuum backandforthery of Star Trek, and the fact that he already died once and was resurrected, I think Leonard is ok. If Khan couldn't kill him for good, nobody can. Old Spock may have died, but there are other Spocks out there in the universe somewhere for sure.
