PAINTING A DOOR

This is truly random:

Any words of wisdom when it comes to painting a steel external door? Our front door gets baked every afternoon so the paint's peeling up badly -- thus I must repaint -- but I'd rather do this as infrequently as possible (preferably once). I'm having a slow week so can devote the time to actually doing this right.

BSH, you're a general-contractor type, what brands/mixtures/methods you recommend? Anybody else with clue?

Otherwise it's me, a power sander, and the nice people at Home Despot. :D

I personally hate painting and thus have devoted my career to advising on entirely grey concrete buildings in lieu of frippery like colors or style. I will ask the painters on my current project, but typically we use an industrial enamel paint. Lowe's or HD will probably have a Rustoleum product similar to it. Oil based paint will wreck your paint brushes and will make you sick with the smell while it cures, but its tough as nails when it dries. You would want to avoid direct sunlight when you paint it and for as long as possible afterwards, so maybe build a little tarpaulin tent over your door while you do this, but MAKE SURE IT IS VENTILATED like leave the sides open or something. Refer to my previous statement regarding smell, those vapors will literally make you small and knock your ass out.

I found this thread and, man, was I confused.

The title and the thread author, didn't compute.

Painting. That's Peter's thing, innit? Why is Bill encasing a door in inches and inches of paint?! Is that maybe some kind of romantic gesture for Mishka, what with the trade she's in?

Piccini, how would you go about painting such a door?

Heh, I've already screwed that up -- I stripped it down to bare metal. Bad start for one of Piccini's projects.
