after getting my 03/04 buell out of the shop again (#12) i have come to the conclusion of my original view of anything Harley.
This bike has been babied since day one and for some damn reason it seems to be barn spoiled (more like repair shop spoiled).
5 short trips from the last time i got it back from the mechanics
the same thing i asked them to fix is fucked up again (the valves).
This is the last time, after it gets back its going to ebay.
I don't remember who told me these were great bikes but i think they may have been on crack at the time.
My 83 yamaha seca 1 rat bike survived a collision with a minivan and still runs years later
when i start it up, I beat the shit out of that bike from day one and it runs better.
It is a sad day for anyone who makes a new bike that can not compare to used one in bad shape.
What was it? the patented harley oil? they didn't tune it to the patented harley sound they wanted? Or that they did try to tune it to the patented harley sound?
I thought by now they were using enough Japanese parts to make them run but i suspect i was wrong and they need more Japanese parts or need to let buell run buell if they haven't yet i don't know iv'e kind been a little busy lately to keep up with the ass clowns at harley.

any way i feel a little better now that iv,e screamed into the void,
and do not intend to say anything more on this subject ever again, i am done with anything Harley, they are a waste of air.

Hey man, HD fuelies can be a big fat ass pain... or they can run perfectly.... sorry for your drama, and hope you find a rig that is less fickle... I am with you... rather have my run of the mill scruffy jap bike to ride than a bike that ends up as garage art and wallet rape...

Good luck! I have a HD bagger that was a pain, and got a Thundermax... it has helped tremendously... but still, for a day to day, point and shoot bike? My Kaw just jams, and has never (knock on laptop) let me down.

I got some extra HD patches... you want one to wear upside down on something for a while?? Sort of a silent protest? I know that bs I went through really fucked with me. Never had a bike with that much drama, and I bought the pig BRAND NEW...

Sorry to hear that your Buell has fallen from your good graces, Spyder. That bike looked like you took really decent care of it. No way around some new bikes being high-maintenance pains in the @ss, no matter what brand they carry. Sorry yours happened to be the Buell. That company tried to give so many good breaks to U.S. service men and women, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions, yada, yada...

Sucks to hear of the cash drain this lump is causing. I hope you can find a good, solid ride to replace it soon.

i'm sorry to hear about all your troubles. i had a bunch of headaches with my first buell (01 M2) but nary a hiccup with my City-X. you should post these concerns over on the http://www.badweatherbikers.com website and see what Court will have to say. they seem to have a direct line to customer service at Buell HQ. maybe they can help you out.

What is it about the valves that you know is wrong with the bike?

What has the bike been in the shop for each time?

Was any of it warranty work?

Have you had the same shop do all of the work?

Sorry to hear about the problems you've had on that bike Spyder, if it makes you feel better I've had my run of disaster with my bike as well (there is a 50/50 chance my gearbox will grenade in 8k miles :x AGAIN!). I have to say, I'm not likely to ever buy another new bike, or at the very least I'll get one where I can do all of the work myself.

Dropping $9-18k on a bike only to have to bring it back and forth to the dealer for a bunch of runaround and then be told that not only do you have to foot the bill, but you'll have to keep keep on doing so because you don't have all of the "special tools" as well as diagnostic computers, training and the manuals are essentially worthless. Add to this that the parts are being discontinued within years of the bike as well.

People say that when you buy a used bike you are buying someone else's problems, but at this point I think the same is true of a new bike; you're just paying extra to be first in line for them.
They swore it was the correct one, but swearing doesn't make a sprocket fit where it doesn't want to. --WeAintFoundShit

As for me? Craigslist, Ebay, Cycletrader, For Sale Signs... I feel better buying a used bike, because my expectations are different, and there is lots of cool stuff to choose from. Not as easy as buying a new bike because you end up on a hunting trip, but to me, that is half the fun...

I get pretty pedantic about my KZ750, and I'm sure you're all sick of hearing about it, but I traded a $50 guitar amp for my bike, then dug it out of a sand dune. I had to fix some electrical stuff and replace the wheel bearings and clean out the brakes, but I've never had to get inside the engine! Not once!

It may not be as fast as a new bike, but it's pretty damn fast, it handles pretty well, and I've gotten tremendous bang for my buck!

There's a lot to be said for 28 year old Japanese bikes...

I like my Hondas plenty much, but Spyder shouldn't feel like that's his only choice. After all, there's nothing like racking up the miles on a loping, old-school, easy-to-work-on, air-cooled pushrod V-Twin. And it only gets better if the bike has a split personality and thrashes corners like nobody's business. He just needs to know that the good ones come from Mandello del Lario, not Milwaukee. :mrgreen:

I think God hates me.....It is now 02/10/2017 and the only bike I still have is that Buell.
I was jonesing so bad for a ride the other week I got the POS started (with a lot of effort) and broke every damn law just to ride around the block (short of running over my wifes boyfriend). I forgot how loud that thing was. It did not want to start the next day :cry:

Fuck the stealership. I think Erik was forced by Huckleberry Dammit-son to build in a fuckyou widget that makes the bike suck more when you take it to somebody else to fix it. wrench that bastard into submission.

If you do go the Harley route I've been very satisfied with the chrome-bratwurst that is my V-Rod. It has been disturbingly reliable except for eating batteries (I'll be wiring in an upstream cut-off soon).

Whatever you do, don't so much as sit on a BMW. You'll never forgive yourself, as you will be unable to purge that krauthammer from your memory every time you mount the Buell {goddamn Jerries...you too DG}

Rode just about every type of bike, Moto Guzzi, Bmw, Hardly, Kawi, yamaka, Suzuki, BSA, CZ, Chinese, what ever they were riding, taken from Iraqi insurgents (think one was made in Iran), and some friend in Tonga had an unidentifiable POS he let me put around on. Still for the most part don't have a preference other than I'm not a huge cruiser fan and that just falls into style not brand.

OK... Some time has elapsed so here is the latest update on me on my don't knock it till you try it,
eating my words, Harley faze of life.

1999 Sportster 883 Hugger

Pros:
1. You get a Free T Shirt when you buy a Harley from their store.
2. They have A Harley store in Brazil
3. It has two wheels and a motor & gets me from point A to B
4. It will do a Ton
5. it takes a lick'n & keeps on Tick'n
6. $4000 purchase price

Cons:
1. IT COST ME $700 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR A SET OF TIRES THAT HAD THE WORDS HARLEY DAVIDSON STAMPED ON THEM.
2. MY BRAKES LOCKED UP AND HAD TO BE REBUILT $$$$ (yes I know.. Used Bike)
3. Cornering angle on right side significantly less than the left side because of Pipes
4. The Seals will need to be replaced (Granted it was bought with 15 some odd thousand miles)
5. I'm still hearing that it takes Harley Oil crap at the store when I ask them 10W what does it take
6. A little slow off the line ( It is an 883, to be expected) but not too bad
7. The stock shocks are the first things that should be replaced for something after market (suck factor 9)
8. My kick stand spring fell off in a corner doing 70 (that was Interesting to say the least) $10 replacement, not bad.

So all in all...
I haven't set on fire and thrown it off a cliff. This is a good sign.
I will need to find a more affordable place to have worked on, now that I am out of a tiny southern town with limited options,
this will reduce any Con that involves a dollar sign. (Really? $700 dollars. uughhh)

Conclusion. It'll do.

I may have jinxed myself.... The HD 99 is in the shop for a $1000+ repair. For some unknown reason oil is not getting to the gear box. Plenty of oil in the bike. I'm told it will be down for two weeks and parts are on order. Just got the word on it from the Harley shop and they were scratching their heads also. What was that line from Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man about the Kawasaki? Change the words rice grinding to corn grinding and we may have something. Also, may have to scratch out #5 on the Pros, we shall see.

they cracked it like an egg to look inside it. I haven't heard back from them as of yet so it's a waiting game right now.

Repair quote Harley Davidson:
Removed trans/primary drain plug and only (aprox) 2 ounce of rust colored oil came out.
Drain plug had excessive amount of metal shavings on magnet.
Removed primary cover to inspect drive components for serviceability.
Pri chain moves freely w/ no binding.
Clutch pack thickness above min spec (MEAS @ 0.710" - Min thickness = 0.6610")
No damage to visible gear teeth noted (comp sprocket and clutch basket)
Clutch cable sheathing worn through (possible location for loss of primary/ trans oil.

Enrichner cable broken does not stay out on its own "Its a choke guys... come on. Stop trying to church it up."
Furl hose cracking.
Oil reservoir drain hose leaking.

So after a boat load of "Nickel and Dime parts" IE gaskets, ball bearings, cotter pins, and two weeks in the shop..... $1,427.09
And it feels slower for some reason.
