I think we were talking about this in another thread, but I found some interesting theory about how the electric grid will deal with all this demand in the future. It boils down to having multitudes of electric vehicles plugged in at all times. If a standard can be developed that allows 2-way charging, when the grid gets a spike, it pulls current from all the plugged in vehicles. As the vehicle owner, you can opt in or out, or even be compensated for the electricity that is pulled from your battery.

I encourage anyone interested to read both installments of the "Electric Terry" interview on New Atlas, but he specifically talks about this issue in part two:

IIRC, my concern was like a motorway service station, many miles away from large cities and/or large generating stations. Exactly where you might have to charge your car, at least partially, in just a few minutes.
While many car batteries might serve to buffer the grid, there must be a connection between the grid and that far-removed motorway service station, basically an umbillical extension of the grid, to a place where there won't be cars nearby to offer up a charge.

I guess they would install a massive battery or capacitor at that service station. But it would still need a substantial power line to charge up during non-peak hours, and to have some extra capacity for rising demand or situations with unusually high demand. Suppose they only need those 10.2 MW I suggested for two hours per day, and average 0.5 MW over the remaining 22 hours (that's probably lowballing, I'd guesstimate). That's 31.4 Megawatt-Hours per day. To give a safety margin, make it 36 Megawatt-Hours per day. That would still require a 1.5 Megawatt power-supply to satisfy that demand, and charge up the gargantuan battery they'd have to have, running 24/7.

And that's a single mode of failure. One powerline fails, and hundreds, if no thousands of cars might get stranded in the middle of nowhere.
So to make sure it works, you'd need at least one more connection to that distant grid, one that can handle the same load on its lonesome.

Alternatively, one might install a bio-gas fueled gas-turbine generating station at one such distant locale, one that fires up whenever that long, long line fails.
I did the googles, and a 1.5 MW natural gas fired generating stations would cost >US$ 1 million to install. A busy motorway service station surely is expensive already, these days.
But take that US$ 1 million, add to that the massive cost of the buffering battery, and the long powerline(s).
I guess, quite possibly, the cost-effective solution would be no grid-connection at all. Just installing a couple of redundant generators, and large battery, and deliver biogas or synthetic hydrocarbons by truck. Would be a lot of trucks. But shouldn't be much more than the trucks presently delivering the fossil-fuels that such a remote service station is presently providing, so that should work.

I'd seen some pix of the newest ̶C̶o̶n̶f̶e̶d̶e̶r̶a̶t̶e̶ Curtisss bike, I hadn't clicked on any of the articles to learn that J.T. Nesbitt is actually back on the design team there. I dig this Hades WAY more than the ridiculous looking Zeus. However, like all the other post-Wraith, post-Nesbitt ̶C̶o̶n̶f̶e̶d̶e̶r̶a̶t̶e̶ Curtisss designs, it looks like someone got a new CNC Machine for Xmas and just HAD to build a motorcycle. Routing and 45deg chamfers everywhere, but it just doesn't appear "finished".
Anyway, the specs look pretty awesome, but the 217HP and 147 lb-ft spec is the first e-moto I've seen w/ a higer HP number than torques.

I hope they build it!

Hare scramble on a Sur-Ron electric Freeride bike. 16 miles in 58 minutes. The Sur-Ron is about $4000 and is sort of a mountain-bike motorcycle hybrid (no pedals) i.e. small lightweight and uses some bicycle suspension components.

His battery quit just a few turns from the finish. It was fun to watch the end and hear everyone in the pits going "What is that thing?". And the rider getting lots of congratulations.

The Sur-Ron is a neat little trail bike with about 125cc's worth of power. Apparently just bought or licensed by Segway. Hopefully the price doesn't go up. It's around $4000 now.

For a tupperbike, this looks great, yeah. In absolute terms, I'm not loving it.
I know that the electric bike future won't be making with the pretty engines anymore, but that's actually one of the things I dread. The end of what, to my eyes, are beautiful motorcycles. Those that show off sexy bits.

I kinda like it as well. If you can ignore the dark bits, the bodywork looks a lot like a bird launching itself into flight, to me. I give them credit for a fairly-beautiful form on a platform (electric, generally speaking) that hasn't had many beautiful designs. No, it's no 1934 Henderson, but it has a lot more visual appeal to me than what confederate curtiss put out: that thing just looked to me like a dog about to hump a pillow.

I do have to agree on this point. There have been some beautiful engines in the past, but I've also been annoyed recently by the dress-up with false parts to make an engine look more traditional... specifically looking at you Triumph, with your fake carburetor covers for throttle bodies, useless cooling fins (ok, maybe not useless, but definitely unnecessary on liquid-cooled mills), and so forth.

It's one of the reasons I liked the new Scouts -- they make no bones about being liquid-cooled and modern. They didn't try to recreate the old Scouts, they just made a nod to it.

Well, this sucks but it looks like the Lightning Strike is a scam and Lightning can't possibly survive for very much longer.

Listening to the Motorcycles & Misfits podcast, they had a couple notable emoto experts on. Brandon Miller, Zero's Pikes Peak racer, and Morgan Vetter (Craig Vetter's son). They had recently met one of the very few people to actually receive a Strike. They described the situation and it is mind boggling and infuriating. To get bikes out the door, Lightning is sending out the full $20,000 "carbon edition" bikes with a half-size battery and a less powerful motor, with a promise to the owner to upgrade them "when the parts become available".

I don't really know why, but I'm having a viscerally angry reaction to this story. I guess I'm just really tired of lofty promises & vaporware only to be followed up by scam artist tactics where you push dangerous, half-baked hardware into the hands of unsuspecting consumers. CCW releases an electric motorcycle. The Falcon. It certainly looks rad to me. Price is $8-15k, which is somewhat comparable to the Zero FX, but the Falcon makes about half the power. The company claims much if the bike is US made which would explain the higher cost.

I hope to be able to test ride one soon.

Wow didn’t see the shit about Lightning before now, that’s seriously fucked up. Seems like overpromising and under-delivering is the mantra for venture capitalist driven business models. Sad to see it infect the MC industry.

Judging by the top pic (which I can't link in here), it also looks like the Falcon weighs about as much as one of your home-brews, PA. If it's powered like a Zero FX and weighs under 100 lbs? That might explain the price too.

Shit, good point! I guess the power to weight issue didn't really sink in while i was reading the article. So, yeah, from the article: "The redeeming detail is that these bikes weigh just 150 to 175 pounds!" Whereas a base Zero FX is 247lbs and the Zero w/ the big battery is 275-ish, I think.

So, okay, that pulls the specs a bit closer to "comparable". I'll screenshot that picture:

We'll see how they do. They may be shooting for competing in the luxury/sweet-design niche that Cake seems to be dominating. The Cake Kalk (hey baby, you wanna take a ride on my Kalk?). I haven't brought them up in this thread before because their business model seems like a fashion-wear business. They've somehow got amazing press for a bike that is spec'd like a $3000 bike, w/ $3000 worth of Ohlins suspension on it, and an IKEA like Scandinavian design, for about $15,000 retail. They must have the most amazing press agent because they're in every fancy magazine and at all the "hot" shows like the One Show.

Anyway, maybe the striking design opens the CCW bike up to that silicone-valley crowd that appreciates nice design and status symbols over actual price-per-performance figures...

I've long been intrigued by the e-bike food delivery guys operating in Manhattan when I am there. As a scooter/bike guy and e-bike curious, I noticed right away that the bikes they are using have no commercial counterpart that I have seen, and always been curious about how there must be an invisible mechanical support system for them, just like livery cars must have specialty garages that keep them on the road. This article doesn't go all that deep, but the writer did indeed seek out and find at least one of the hiding-in-plain-sight businesses which supports this system.
