A Chair Shaped Object (300 coats of paint)

Post by piccini9 » Sat Dec 17, 2011 6:14 pm

I'm starting an art project on the Solstice, December 22 this year. This past Wednesday at the end of the day I nailed together a rather crude chair shaped object. Smaller than even a small child would want to sit in, it has nice lines, almost monumental in a small way. On the 22nd I'm going to paint it. Then I'm going to paint it every day for the next year, just one coat of paint a day, alternating colors. There will be photo documentation, and a little notebook with paint colors documented. I spent today clearing a space in the basement for this. Will be posting photos as I go along.

Paint it daily for 20 years and it might be big enough for an adult to sit in.

Oh wow, I remember a while back a group of local artists did the same thing with an Absolut Vodka billboard in Houston.
It was cool as shit to watch it change colors, and it was noticeably thicker when it was all said and done.
Good luck.

Thanks, that clears up some confusion.

Late tonight, early tomorrow it is then. Also, the smaller chair is going to make an appearance in a film one of my "wacky art friends" is making.
I'm so excited about this it isn't even funny. :D

Well. The first chair to be painted was the smaller of the two. It was painted BLOOD RED after taking my friend down from the cross following production of his Solstice Snuff Film.
Then I painted the other chair WHITE, according to plan. This took place at around 2:00 AM on Thursday, I can't tell you how hard it was to not paint them again on Thursday afternoon.
Friday I painted them both WHITE just to get the two chairs in sync, and today I painted them both PINK, (some horrid color I had left over from a job) they will probably be painted alternately WHITE and PINK for a while because that's what I have on hand.
I am now considering adding a Ham Shaped Object to the mix. :D

If I haven't said so yet, I think this is great.

Have you considered taking a photo every day and posting it to a tumblr or something?

Once you've spent a year painting it, hit it with a sander/grinder in some spots and you should have an interesting color pattern.

Good luck! We all expect daily pictures, of course.

Tumblr is a simple microblog platform, ideal for blogging images. Example, another, yet another (those are links). It's meant to be very easy to use (if you can post images to this board, posting to Tumblr should be child's play). Another idea would be to open a Twitter account and tweet a photo every day, also easy.

Why would you want to? Well, it might help get your art seen by wider audience, if that's something you'd like. We think A Chair Shaped Object is a cool idea, other people out there surely will too. The advantage of Tumblr or Twitter over Facebook and this place is discoverability, those people might be able to actually find your stuff. There is of course no guarantee, but one thing the internet loves is regularly updated things, which this project seems ideal for.

Uniform Resource Locator, you know them as links or internet addresses. For instance http://www.blackletter.org or http://www.tumblr.com are URLs. If you are creating a tumblr, put in what you'd like the URL to be, keeping in mind that it will append .tumblr.com to whatever you enter (ie: enter "achairshapedobject" and the URL will be http://www.achairshapedobject.tumblr.com ).

Tumblr addresses generally take the form of <whatever you called it> dot tumblr dot com so I shuffled the words of the link you provided around when that didn't work. The address for you for uploading and management purposes may be the slash blog slash etc, or not, I don't know.

I'm supposed to be doing Xmas at my brohams right now so I'll have to give you some thoughts on making it easier to find after I get back.

Happy Xmas! Hail Santa!
