Man. Just think if the back of the chairs gloop down to join the seat. 10 months yet; you never know.

Girth is important.

Out of curiosity, are you going to cut a cross-section out of it when completed? I bet that'd be cool to see.

What is the texture of the chair now? Does the paint dry hard between coats, or is it a bit spongy?

The plan has been to cut it open after it's all painted. One of the reasons for doing two chairs is to see what it looks like after being sliced on a bandsaw/hit with a belt sander/has big holes drilled in it. The smaller of the two chairs has no nails in the centerline, for just this reason. The larger of the two has about 84746553840847394 nails in it, and I have no idea where they are. (I was feeling a bit manic, and had a nail gun in my hand)
The paint does dry between coats. I'm using latex house paint, and have been trying to let each coat dry for as close to 24 hours as possible. However, they do have a slightly soft texture, I guess "dry" and "really dry" are two different things. For all I know, if they are just left alone after a year they might start to crack/craze/split open on their own.
There is still plenty of time to decide what to do.
sledit* So as to not miss a day, I'm planning on bringing them to D00m!
Also, I started out doing a different color every day, but ran into some problems with paints reacting badly with the previous coat, so I'm doing two coats of each color now, it won't be 366 alternating layers, but it will be a year's worth of paint.
Maybe the next project I'll try to do alternating black/white, or something.

Bring it to DooM! Pete. We'll take it to where I work and shoot it with a nice coat of Imron or an epoxy grout used to seal pilings.

I have been painting underneath, but not all the way under. Only the bottoms of the skirt. It's leaving a nice, thick edge where the legs meet the underside of the seat, I'll take some pics tonight. I signed and dated the bottoms when I built them, but so much paint has dripped i there that the writing is pretty much illegible.

Imron? I didn't even know they still made that stuff. Would I be able to paint over it with latex?

Linky no worky, but I think I've seen that guy, started with a baseball in 1973 or something?
I plan to stop on December 21st of this year, (I can stop any time I want, really) and will then begin the sanding/sawing/drilling/or whatever subtractive technique seems appropriate.

Getting even more Dali-esque.

But rreally, I don't know what color you have in store for Dec. 21, but might I suggest that iridescent copper? It's such a beautiful color, but more importantly, it brings so much of the texture out. Very very cool.
