Me, I've got "Self-Destructing Cookies" plugins in my various browsers. Which lets me accept all cookies everywhere, smug in the knowledge that they will be deleted the instant I close that browser tab. So season 5 is out today, it appears.
Curiously, Amazon Prime is letting me see it. It is unusual for them to be more competent than Netflix (I only get new Disco episodes one day after you lot, even though I'm in a time zone in the future!).

Late to this party bu am just starting season 5. I watched season 1 ages ago and didn't really dig it, but game it another try and got hooked. The fact that space actually acts like space (within reason) is fantastic.

Season 5 is really really good. I'm on episode 7.

I read an interview that stated the pilot originally had no sound in space but it didn't get good reviews, so space sounds it is.

Hm. Curious. I hadn't noticed. I had had the impression that the sounds we, the audience, hear are the sounds persons aboard a ship would hear. Or a person inside a suit, with the breathing and all. The point-of-hear just never is in the vacuum proper.

As for the season 5 finale.
Spoiler
Show
The season finale greatly disappointed me.
It's not bad. On it's own, it's good. It's just not as good as the rest of season 5.
For one, everyone meeting at the UN, everyone being happy until they are hit around the head with one of several season 6 cliffhangers. That felt wrong. And one of my favorite characters got dead. Suddenly and unexpectedly, which is realistic. Just in the narrative, it wasn't really handled.

Of course, there is good reason for the weird scene with everyone meeting at the UN, and why Alec's death felt so crammed in retroactively.
Because it was. Filming for the season had wrapped when allegations of sexual harassment, from multiple women, were leveled against the actor. The producers decided against shooting as much as an extra second with the guy, so his "death scene" was assembled from previously shot material. I suppose the protagonists' final scene was similarly improvised.

The season's final scene, meanwhile. It's just one more cliffhanger, of which this episode seemed to have more than it's share. Would have preferred to see those scattered over several episodes.
Since season 6 had already been ordered before filming began on season 5, afaik, I see no reason why they couldn't have done that.

I watched all of Season 6 yesterday. While I'm happy to have some level of "closure", why bother with some of the other story arcs, just to leave them unfulfilled? For example:
Spoiler
Show
1. Why show us the happenings on Laconia, and the "dogs"?
2. What's with the Ring Entites?
3. What happened when the big Ring maker ship started powering up?
Seems like a lot of wasted screen time.
I know, I know, read the books.

Option 1: remember the "7 seasons and a movie" thing people had been hoping to get out of Community? Amazon could certainly afford it after just six seasons, though the cast will be charging Dath Bezo's actual arm and leg for it.
No, I'm thinking that they might have agreed to a contractual stipulation that they had to leave a few loose threads at the end of however many seasons they agreed on then.
Bollocks, why would they?
Show
When Amazon "picked up" the show, that wasn't like another local station might pick up a show back in the days of three networks, not even how a networks might pick up another network's castoff. Back then, in the US, you lot had actual anti-trust legislation, laws that actually forced large businesses to compete in more than just name.
CBS never "made" Star Trek. Outside news, they were not allowed. At least not to the degree that they could have filled their schedule with in-house productions. The law forced them to buy shows from independent producers like DesiLu.

But James Corey didn't sell the TV rights to his books to DesiLu, or any other independent producer. He sold them to the channel that would air them, SyFy. So when Amazon Prime "picked up" the show, I'm betting that there were an bunch of negotiations. I can't believe that SyFy didn't have some "get outta x free" card to play there. After which, anyone wanting to keep the show going would only not have needed SyFy's blessing, or at least the receipt. But also the go-ahead from Corey, or any other party Corey may have transferred/lost the rights to.
I'm thinking Corey or whoever has spent the last year or more shopping around the movie rights for The Expanse. Or even the rights to a much cheaper new show, with a whole new, wholly cheaper cast, picking up where this show left off.

Option 2: Amazon themselves might have wanted to keep the options open to make a spinoff movie or show.

Option 3: I'm totally wrong about the streaming business model, and Amazon might even have wanted to keep the options open for a seventh season, or more even, but didn't want to decide until the very, very last moment. The latter is usually when a show's sets are struck, so if option 3 is actually correct, I fear they said "nopes".

Option 4: spectacularly awful meddling from corporate. Which would not, in any way, rule out any of the other options, of course. But the larger a corporation, the less the right hand knows about what the left hand is doing, and far worse.
Someone may have decided "we want loose ends!", while another person, entirely independent of any such decision, just thought that, having read and understood the books better than anyone around them (which, in colloquial corporate, means they read a few chapters years ago, or got the highlights via blinkist, or chatted to someone who had read almost half of the series), they knew just what had to go in to the last season. And went a 'meddlin.
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

I said I have a big stick.
