Important infos about cookies
Show
To be remembered, you must have cookies enabled in your browser. Some people prefer using "private" browsing mode - which precludes cookies being placed on your device in the first place.
Some people use regular browsing mode, but may have chosen to disable all cookies in their settings. Sometimes, these people will end up tearing their hair out because a lot of websites just don't work at all, like many online stores, as many e-commerce platforms don't do bugger all without using cookies.
Me, I've got "Self-Destructing Cookies" plugins in my various browsers. Which lets me accept all cookies everywhere, smug in the knowledge that they will be deleted the instant I close that browser tab. I can even set it to delete the cookies only when I close the whole browser window, which is helpful with online stores.
And I can whitelist sites like the board, so the plugin doesn't mess with those cookies at all.
And you must use the same browser, on the same machine. Unless you're using something like a cookie manager that syncs to all your devices and things, your apple browser on your ipad won't have the delicious cookies chrome has on your PC. And unless google now manages cookies between your devices (who knows what the fuck they do), even chrome on your Android won't have the same cookies as chrome on your notebook, or chrome on your other Android.

If you've visited the forum at any time after November 18, 2020, you will have seen the message about a supposed data breach that may have exposed passwords. I know you will have seen it because, until today, there was a big general announcement right at the top of the everything.
Seeing how it's been nearly 18 months since that, with no further alarms getting rung, and how everyone has had 758,214 opportunities to take a minute to think about the security of their passwords, I've taken that notice down.

So, I'm not a huge space related sci-fi fan but I really like the Expanse so far. No alien invaders, no intergalactic peaceful federation, just people doing what people do but in space. 3 different political factions (Earth, Mars, and the Belters). They basically created a new creole language for the Belters, pretty cool.

Re: The Expanse
I know it's cliche, but the books are better.
But yeah, both the books and the TV series are awesome. I'd strongly advise reading "Leviathan Wakes" before watching too much of the series as they don't quite describe the sociopolitical fuckery that's going on in the solar system. It's easily the best sci-fi series that describes what'd happen with modern humans in our solar system. It also gets reeeeally deep into the physics of space travel and the problems that creates.
The later books started loosing steam starting with "Persepolis Rising," but up until then it's fuckin' fantastic. At some point I'll get through Persepolis Rising and Tiamat's Wrath, but they're set 30 years after the initial books.
Regardless, yeah, welcome to the party.

I watched the first episode back in 2017 (?) right after our second was born. I recall liking it but we never started watching it as the Mrs isn't a huge sci-fi fan. I watched episodes 1 and 2 and loved them both.Jaeger wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 7:34 amI know it's cliche, but the books are better.

Each night, I'm torn between trying to get some garage time (now delayed due to parts), playing the Nintendo Switch my Mama-San bought the kiddos, or watching The Expanse (also working our way through She-Ra on Netflix. Don't laugh, it's a damn good cartoon.)
Of course, that's assuming I have free time and we're not cleaning, mowing or working.

Ashford. The way he ended at the end of season 4 was, while dramatically appropriate, a massive bummer. I liked that guy. He was no nonsense, and he didn't just talk the talk about giving his life for the cause. He actually went and did it, more than once. Well, tried doing it, and failed, until he didn't. But not in some lame big gesture bs. Iirc he just did it (tried it) when it needed doing, without a big audience.
But he wasn't some mad fanatic, intent to kill "the enemy" at every turn, and instead showed mercy and opened his ship for the other side's wounded. Sure, that was also a highly effective shield against further attack. But at that point, it wasn't like he needed such a shield more than anything else.

I recently read Neal Stephenson's SEVENEVES, and the shit about the physics of not so much "space travel", but orbital dynamics was the most fascinating part of the book. If you're into that sorta shit, read that book! Acts one and two of the book are awesome. I had a problem with Act three, but it was a really enjoyable read, nonetheless...
