Take: One fondue pot and cooker, fill with red wine, add a clover, a cinnamon stick, slices of orange and lemon.
Heat until the alcohol just begins to evaporate.
Now, suspend a sugar cone over the pot, douse the same in highest percentage brown rum, light on fire.
Keep pouring the rum on the sugar until the same has disappeared entirely.
Fish clover, cinnamon and fruit slices out ot the pot and dispense contents into cups. Drink and be merry.

This recepy is extremely shortened and may be inaccurate, but a Feuerzangenbowle is something everyone should do once a winter.
I did last night and am now enjoying my most glorious hangover, however I dampened the same's effect somehwat by following up the Feuerzangenbowle with wine, Jägermeister and Jim Beam + Coke.

Sounds fantastic! Is a sugar cone like a sugar cube?

not exactly........

In the olden days, when refined sugar wasn't sold loose, it was made convenient for transport by casting it. For technical reasons
however, it looked somewhat like this:

Modern sugar cones, if that even is the right word, we call them Zuckerhut, are about 250gramms and look like this:

Here is a recepy for Feuerzangenbowle, not identical to how we
did it the other day but should work fine for 6 or so people.

Ingredients:
3 bottles of Bordaeux or other red wine
1 slice non-sprayed (crop dusting, etc.) orange
1 slice of non-sprayed lemon
5 cloves
the juice of one lemon
1 piece of cinnamon stick
1 Sugar cone 250g
0,5 Liters of high-percentage rum (more then 54%)
copper or other fireproof pot
2 ladles, one with holes, one without
a small stove (like a camping stove or a hotplate or something)
fire tongs (the v shaped kind, solid metal, no wood. ideally, you would use a bit of sheet metal with holes like this:
Image

Preparation:
Pour wine into pot. Lard the orange and lemon peels with the cloves and add them, the lemon juice and the cinnamon to the wine.
Heat, but do not boil (wait for the vapors to appear).
Using the firetong, suspend the sugarcone above the pot's center with it's tip towards the narrow end of the firetong.
Pour so much rum on the sugar cone that the cone is entirely drenched (don't pour the rum into the wine).
Light the sugar cone on fire.
Using the laddle, keep pouring rum on the sugar cone until the sugar has entirely dissappeared.
Remove fire tongs, use a ladle with holes in it (ask your wifes :))
to fish out the spices and fruit.
Serve in fireproof glasses or cups.

I just made this last weekend with some friends and it was glorious, much better then gluewein in my opinion at least. Isn't there a movie associated with this drink too? I missed the showing because I was bumming around rome at the time, but it seems like the german equivalent of rocky horror. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.
Oh, btw in case you were wondering i am studying in germany for a year.

Yes, there is a movie, "Die Feuerzangenbowle" with Heinz Rühmann (brilliant actor that, shame on his socializing with the Nazis).
But the Feuerzangenbowle itself only plays a side-role as it is the drink a group of men are having while discussing mischief from their school days. It turns out one of them, Rühmann, never went to a public school but had a private teacher instead. So he decides to disguise himself as a student and go attend a public school.
