One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don't drink tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.
But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that — for reasons that aren't entirely clear — abstaining from alcohol does tend to increase one's risk of dying, even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.

The one thing that beats a good excuse to have a drink is a good reason to have a drink.

Also, now I understand how my parents don't act their advanced ages, they preserved themselves.

Also, with tobacco preventing Alzheimers, Coffee reducing your cancer risk and chocolate lowering your blood pressure, all that is needed now is a good medical indication for bacon and it's Woody Allen's The Sleeper, like, totally.

I'm calling bullshit.

Heavy drinking is in no way, shape or form good for you. A friend of mine died 2 years ago because of it. He was only 40.

Moderate drinking has some benefits, but quite a few harmful effects as well. Anything mass produced is going to have negative effects.

Not drinking at all is the best option. Unfortunately I like beer too much.

Who paid for this bogus study? I bet it was the alcohol industry. Maybe even the healthcare industry.
