Well, from what I understand, most of Detroit is pretty much in worse shape than Old Detroit, right?

So, even if someone did notice and complain that an enthusiast of some manner erects a 60 ft statue of Officer Murphy in a visible public space, would the city of Detroit actually have the money to do something about it? They are cutting cop patrols and garbage collection, aren't they? How much does it cost to remove 50 tons of old auto-plant structural steel welded into the shape of a retro-futuristic lawman?

Heck, if the city supported it, I'm sure somewhere, they'd be able to find investors and convince the copyright holders to allow the creation of RoboCop FunLand, with rides and a stunt show and a huge statue that spins it's gun on it's finger. They could have ED-209's playland to keep the kids busy, and turbine-powered Oldsmobiles racing through an abandoned steel mill...could be like the Disneyland of the rust belt.

Another reason to turn down a statue of Robocop:
The po-po are not seen as a “Force for Good”.

17 is just how many they caught, or decided to catch. I personally have the theroy that they hung 17 "little fish" or guys that were on the outs to make it LOOK like they were cleaning things up.

Things have not really improved. They are still just as corrupt. The ones that aren’t on the take, are just ineffectual. It has always been a “Keep yourself safe” sort of town. So you put up a huge statue of Robocop. What do you accomplish? Scarring the crap out of people, “good” and “bad”.

Detroit, I both love and hate you.

Peter Weller (some fuck wad / the guy that played R-cop) ... understands people who say that Detroit has more pressing issues to deal with, but he also sees that it's an emblem of what's great about Detroit, too.

How could it be an emblem of what is good about Det!? There are many great things about the Motor City. Perseverance, Ingenuity, the Blending of cultures, a major city that still retains that neighborhood feel (in Hamtramck I knew every family for 3 block around, and could walk in for dinner at most)...ALL things to celebrate.

They did a bunch of filming on Robocop movies in the shittier parts of Denver, Colorado when I was living there. For better or for ill, those beautiful and apocolyptic places in the city have been leveled and reborn as cheesy sportsbars, stadiums and overpriced retail... a theme park for suburban morons to revel in. Myself, I'd rather live in a city of rusted metal than shiny plastic, but I'm guessing even the most beautiful of rusted metal gets depressing after a bit eh?

I agree that Detroit has much bigger things to put time and money into than a statue of a fictional robot, but being a fan of the movies I think it would be pretty cool.

Oh, and Rolly, they filmed Battlestar Galactica in Canada too. It was in Vancouver but just be like us Unitedstatesians and claim the whole damn country! Hell, we call Hawaiian stuff ours! Even Alaska!
