Well, technically, though I personally don't consider it quitting smoking as such.
I switched to them fancy modern "electronic cigarettes", aka nicotine inhalers, whatever you want to call them.
Battery, steam-generator, reservoir of liquid, my nicotine fix is now tar, carbon-monoxide, almost all-nasty-free.
I actually enjoyed smoking, but after a few colleagues at work switched to the electric things, and seemed happy with it, I decided to give it a go for the simple expedient of money. After the initial investment into the equipment, the cost of my nicotine habit is down from about a fiver a day to a fiver a week. That's some serious moolah.
I haven't bought cigarettes in two weeks, and I smoked the last one I had in the last open pack I still had about ten days ago. Don't miss it.

There are some downsides, like no longer being able to use the time it takes to smoke a cigarette as a handy timing device, the electric cigarettes need to be plugged in for recharging and if you drag to hard, you end up spilling the liquid stuff everywhere.
But there#s a tradeoff with everything.
The liquid stuff is available in many flavors, like Tobacco, Strawberry, Applea, Peaches, Winston cigarettes, Camel, Malbolo (that's what it says on the bottle, I swear), even Mary Jane (again, that's what it says on the bottle).
Oddly enough, you can even get it nicotine-free, though I don't quite see the point in that.

Haven't noticed any weight gain or change in my eating habits from giving up the old coffin nails.

Just as an FYI, these electric thingies are worth a try. If you stick with it for a few weeks, they pay for themselves in the money you save on tobacco.

Technically, smoking-prohibitions shouldn't apply to these things, but since anti-smoker-activists are these days more concerned with punishing smokers for their moral degeneracy rather than actually protecting non-smokers from anything, I wouldn't bank on it.

This is what they look like:


The little mouthpiece/liquid-reservoir things at the top right can be refilled. The charger plugs into a USB connector on the computer or the usual adaptors for wall outlets or in-car cigarette-lighters.

Dunno if they are sold in the States, but if you want to save money and/or quit smoking for health reasons, I recommend you try these things. They also don't smell like burnt tobacco does, and you don't have smelly ashtrays to deal with.

My oldest daughter has been using those "things" for a while now. She seems to like them, and she doesn't smell terrible like she used to. So there's that.

Anything you can do to get away from the tar/smoke stuff I have to applaud. I watched my step-father die slowly with emphysema after having smoked for decades, and see the decline of my father who also smoked for decades is on oxygen to help him along with COPD and lings scarred enough from the abuse that they simply no longer process oxygen. No the way to spend your old age even if you find yourself getting there even against all your plans.
So good for you for not slowly killing yourself.

If you're unable to get the juice, or the unit, or have a broken charger, or anything like that, you'll be hanging, and you will go back to smoking.

Lots do, although many say it is the most difficult addiction to quit, even harder than heroin.

For me it was hypnotism. A guy at the front of a room with 20 or so folks, $50.00 a pop. It was like an inspirational talk, no sleeping or anything.

It worked. I had smoked heavily for more than 30 years, and after that meeting, never again since. No longing, desire, or craving. Nothing. Done.

Lots of others quit using other ways, but they quit.

You can too. I hope you will.

I used another substitute that is dead cheap, 100% nicotine free and does not need any plug in.


On the down side, it only comes in one flavour. carrots. go figure.

I suppose electronic cigarettes are a step in the good direction but still must considered as a step. I quit 10 years ago and I absolutely do not regret it.

My solution to quitting smoking was to get sick and panic. Try it, totally works. I used the patch for for the first 2 weeks which may have helped take the edge off, but more importantly it gave me the most bizarre vivid dreams. Seriously that shit is way trippier than LSD.

I tried the electric smokes last year and thought they were pretty excellent. The problem I had was that I smoked them when I couldn't smoke the regular ones, and just ended smoking all the time. I'm going to give it another try, but this time make a good plan to slow the tobacco to a stop in short order.

They weren't much different than regular smokes, and in many ways they were much better. One of the things I didn't like so much about them was that they didn't have enough of the design geek factor for me. I really love using my Zippo, and the charging/carrying case for the electric smokes was made out of cheap plastic and made to look like a regular pack:

I'm thinking that if the cyberpunk/steampunk/dieselpunk fabricators out there decided to start making coolbits for electric cigs they could make a fucking killing.

As much as I love smoking, the thoughts of impending doom are making me more uneasy as time goes on, not to mention it's getting less and less convenient now that the wife has quit.

"Thanks Martin, The rape was most excellent." Goteborg is a city, so it's like snusing to a specific rape in Swedish history I suppose. In any regard, I need to order some stuff via GG's link. Camel Frost isn't cutting it.

[edit] I thought I would add, last summer my Swede buddy and I were staying at a hostel (actually on a boat in Stockholm) and he throws a snus in while going to sleep. It kind of blew my mind at the time, but I must admit to have doing the same a few times since...usually after a good amount of cocktails.

Well, this stuff I'm using is made out of propylene-glycol and vegetable glycol (same stuff they put in snus), and it's not combusted but vaporized (just to clarify), and since no acute problems have thus far been associated with the stuff, how much worse than the encyclopedia of horrible things found in cigarette smoke can it be?

Im really surprised that no one has modified one of these systems to operate on other forms of smokable materials.

Seriously, there's a big market for this.

Yup The market is big for vaporizers, and they're Very popular out here. Never tried it, but my buddy and his wife did. Excellent returns.

I have two of those. Nothing like smoking a real cig. A real shame in my opinion! Spent about $50 and am not impressed.

Have you tried different liquids?
The difference is more than just the taste.
I find that the 60% PG/40% VG mixture is much harsher on the inside of the mouth than a nice, regular cigarette, while 50%/50% mixture is much, much nicer.

Just wanted to chime in that these eCigs helped me quit habitually smoking while driving at work. I can't say I completely quit, as I'll still burn through some smokes while on a road trip, or if my girlfriend is out of town for a few days, or something, but I'm talking about less than a pack a month.

Anyway, I got an ecig kit for use while at work. It took a while to find the optimal setup (hardwired vaporizer to a special hi-amp 12v USB socket). Once I did, I enjoyed "vaping", as they say. This lasted about 3 -4 months when i noticed my usage was going down. Then one day, i realized I hadn't taken the ecig out of my workbag for a couple days. I decided to leave it in there and its been there ever since. Never really craved it or the real smokes.
