Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

Shameless Self Promotion 2012

Post by smashinator » Wed Oct 31, 2012 7:10 am

Hey all - I haven't been around much lately. Life has been interesting recently.

I know there are a few of you who dig my annual online fiction efforts, so I just wanted to pop in and let you know that I'm doing it again this year. Due to the interesting-ness I mentioned, however, I'm doing things a little differently this year.

I've set the novel-blog to be private, so interested parties will have to log in to read it. If you send me your google email address, I can give you access. Sorry to be exclusionary, and a pain in the ass, but I don't want my writing to be public this year.

This year, the story is going to ask the question: What would it be like for an everyday person to have Ares, God of War, as a roommate?

Well it would certainly make you question your belief in "One True God".

Depends on if he mans up and finally gets a bike. Cages are for softies. You tell him that.

Tell Ares that cages are for softies?

You tell him. ;)

Anydangway, another November down, another 50k word novel done. Frankly, I think this year's novel kicks ass. There's violence, there's comedy, there's a bit of sex and romance, there's some incongruous pirates, there's a basic doofus who finally triumphs over adversity... what more could you want? [I know, motorcycles. No motorcycles in this draft. Maybe in the rewrite]

Like I said earlier, sorry to have done this as a private blog this year. I have my reasons. However, I'm willing to give you access if you're keen to read it in all it's unedited, rushed (but finished!) glory. Send me a pm with your gmail address, and I'll hook you up.
