Amazing. The footage of Sheene's crumpled form on the Daytona banking always makes me feel ill, but the passion of those guys is just infectious. Racing in those times, cars or bikes, was just balls of steel and damn scary, and to see 25 to 40-odd fellow racers killed during a career is just insane. However, the racing then feels more "pure", if you will. The lack of electronics, traction control, etc. made this such a visceral sport.

I'm glad it is safer, because I don't watch bike racing to see people die, but sometimes "progress" and technological advancements are not in the sports' best interests. I'm glad the TT is still about.

Indeed, those guys (and even the current guys) are an interesting breed. When Sheene was diagnosed with cancer I actually understood why he didn't seek treatment. He got it from smoking which is something he chose to do. I'm certainly not saying he was right, but he didn't want to go out struggling for life. I don't think he realized it would still be a slow process which would break him down to the point of being a shell of his former self. Again, I'm not advocating his position, just saying I got it when he made his decision to refuse treatment. I'm not sure what I would do given the same circumstances.

I think in the first few minutes of the film there is a shot of Barry with a cigarette, he looks 16...
