I've found that my favorite way to absorb French is to watch dubbed movies. It's been working out fairly well, but I'd love to be able to just stream regular french television. I don't suppose any of you guys have any favorite sites to do that? What's the french hulu? Anybody? Xtian? Bueller?

I don't think they are geographically restricted (or use a proxy), but they don't have any subtitles. Arte is just the most interesting TV channel around here, but some of their programs are in german too.

I might not be the best informed person, logically, when I want to see french tv, I usually ... well... just turn the TV on.

Wouldn't there probably be TV for Franco-Canadians? In French?
Pop-culture seems to indicate the Canadians value that bi-lingual stuff, so probably even with an English website, no?

Thanks guys. The arte one is new to me so I'll check it out. I've tried france tv before. Unfortunately because of my location they won't give me their full programming. In fact about all they want to show me is weather...for a place that I'm not in.

You're right about the French Canadian thing. I try to stay away from that though, the last thing I want to do is unwittingly take on some idiotic accent.

A valid concern, from what I understand. However, Quebec is small. France is a lot bigger. It stands to reason one will import more than just movies from the other, there's just more on offer there. Wikipedia tells me TV5 Monde has it's own little offspring, TV5 Quebec.
I'm sure they must have programming with entirely un-silly Languedocois, Breton and Burgundian accents.
Even if they don't want 'mericans to watch it, finding a fast proxy or tor repeater in Canada will probably be slightly easier than finding one in the France.

All the French words I know off the top of my head are "please", "thank you", "shit" and "cheese". I know only one complete sentence, "this is not a pipe", and can count all the way up to four (but not from "zero").

You can put a Quebecois backwoods hick, who's mother is his sister is his uncle, who doesn't even know there even is any language other than his version of French and who has never encountered modern wizardry like TV or radio, and a tenured elocution instructor from a Parisian grande école in front of me. I couldn't tell the fucking difference between their accents if they both sang the Marseillaise.

I apologize for picking on the Bretons, I certainly didn't mean to cast any aspersions on their intellectual achievements or their struggle for independence.

there are two french language series on hulu.com. they have subtitles if you want them on. one is called Braquo, it's my favorite. the other is called Spiral.
they don't have as many episodes per season as we do in the states, though.

now i have to wait i don't know how many months or years for hulu to get season 3 of braquo. i'm seriously addicted.

Trainspotting had English subtitles, because Scottish accents are simply too awesome for continental ears. Anyway fuck télévision, just torrent some Goddard and Nouvelle Vague films, go for the good stuff. the MHZ "network" broadcasts a fair amount of French TV (they ran "spiral" over the summer, but i never really got into it). now they are showing Antigone34 on Tuesdays, Dolmen on Thursdays and Deux flics sur les docks on Fridays, all in French with English subtitiles. i know you can watch it on an apple app; you may be able to see on-line as well.

MHZ also runs quite a bit of Al Jazeera, RT, NHK, Chinese & other assorted international programming, some in English & some not.

No opinion of value in my comment, I just wanted to illustrate the fact that although mostly the same, there are a lot of differences between quebecois french and french french (the slang we us for "kids" is the word you use to name your testicles, that could be embarrassing) and the pronunciation is very different.
Subtitled movies (or series) is a great way to learn a language if you have the comic strip reader kind of brain that can process different informations mixed. French tv overdub everything, but there are a lot of english spoken tv shows with dutch subtitles on dutch and flemish TV.

I can't really tell the difference when I hear it, but I know that every French person I've met likes to make fun of Canadian French.
My favorite is actually to watch French with French subtitles. That way I can try to link up some of the sounds with their grotesque (SEE) spellings. I've gotten some awesome vocabulary from South Park ("Poutain Ouais!") and The Big Lebowski. ("J'ne pas raison!!?") It's best if it's something I already know by heart. Actual French TV is good for getting a little bit of culture in there for whatever that is worth.

Another thing I just heard about is The News In Slow Fench podcast, which may be useful.

I just had another idea.
It takes two years or so for 'merican TV to make it's way over here, even until it gets to our Hulu equivalents, and then it's usually in a crappy German dub or some such. Hulu or Netflix plain won't take my money, it's a globalized economy, you can't expect to buy things from other countries, can you.
But the internet provides. There are a bunch of indexing websites and suchlike where people make it known what current TV show is available on what video-streaming services, or at least until the DMCA stuff happens to it. Also, a lot of stuff ends up on youtube before anyone has a chance to yank it. Old news programmes or documentaries seem to last a little longer, sometimes.
I'd bet actual money that people upload French TV to something somewhere, too, and that someone is running a website indexing that stuff. I'd ask the Google something like "Regarder la télévision montre en ligne gratuit" or some variation thereof. I just got that out of translate, I've got no clue which terms should be expressed how to maximize search-efficacy.
I know not the legality of this in your corner of the woods. Over here, it's at least not illegal, yet, as you can't violate copyright by not making a copy.
