Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

The first season of True Detective is really awesome (and fuckin' DARK). Still, damn good. Also... HOLY FUCK Alexandra Daddario is hawt.

As for GoT, it's good fantasy. Amusingly, if you're a history buff, there are some serious parallels between that plot and the War of the Roses. ;)

The darkness is what makes it amazing. There is a great video on YouTube of all of Rust's philosophical rants. That's what got my hooked on the show.

Trying to figure out both what else I could do in this town for similar monies with less stress and drama, and if I can stand to keep "fighting the good fight" for the same company of the last 20 years for nothing but more responsibility and more 2am calls to fix crap that younger men should get. It's just maddening that they assume you will just keep on keeping on in an area with no ladder left to climb and no path to anything better than the current status quo.
I think I've hit peak apathy.

So I went for my daily ~30 minute march and, quite drenched (I had wrapped up warm ... in 77°F weather ...), I hopped into the grocery store for some odds and ends. You know. Going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. The thing you must NEVER do.
And so a few junk-food-ish items end up in my shopping cart, I've decided to sin today.
And what happens while I'm packing it into my shopping bag? I see the fruit section, and some delicious apples. And suddenly, I start johnesing for apples.
Seriously what the fuck ...
If there were absolutely anything to be afraid of, don't you think I would have worn pants?

Sounds like you're preparing well, so bravo. Be sure to stock up on the hooch. You're going to need it.

Also, while it's always good to have a solid exit strategy, I don't think "riding" your generator would be as much fun as riding the Duc.

Playing KSP, random youtube stuff in the background.
Two firearms retailers complaining about restrictions in gun ownership. "They gonna take your guns! It's the road to socialism!"
About one minute later, though, they are on the subject of machine guns. And that only rich people can afford to own machine guns. My ears perk up. Hm, that sounds like red talk, kinda ...
I decide they just don't notice, moving on ... one of them calls it. Actually describes machine gun ownership in the US as a "class struggle".
No, seriously. "class struggle". He used those words to describe the state of affairs where only rich people can own machine guns. Only about a minute after complaining about badevil socialism, and a minute before he complains about badevil socialism yet again.
The video is from 2012, so when they talk about the "current administration" with the contempt they got, it's the Obama administration, obviously.

Check it out. These guys are kinda funny.

I solder, therefore I am!

I wanted a cheap and simple digital clock to attach to my monitor. I had gotten used to having a big "widget" clock on the screen, but I also got tired of sacrificing that screen real-estate. I bought a really simple and cheap clock on amazon. Problem: cheap and simple LCD displays are useless unless some light is directed right at them.

So, further research. I don't want an alarm clock, I don't want a radio-alarm-clock, I just want a small 7-segmend LED clock that I can read in the dark.
Finally, I found one. Only available in kit form, though.

Well, I think, I've got a really nice soldering iron and all the stuff from when I was working on another project. So I buy it. It arrives the day before yesterday, and I get to work.
Half the plastic parts end up with scorch-marks. When I turn it on, half of the LED segments are dead. I try to re-solder the connectors, but no joy.
So that was my tuition fee I think and order another one. Wasn't expensive. It arrives today and this time I know what to watch out for and how to work it. Only plastic getting scorched is the little plastic clamp I used to hold a component in place while I'm soldering from the other side.
I'm done, I take a break, then I plug it in. Utter darkness, nothing. So I think probably the power supply and get to work on improving the soldering job on all bits of the power supply. Along the way, I notice nimrod, you have to plug the fucking microchips in for it to work!
And voila, it comes to life! A few segments on the right most digit are missing, but soldering some more solder on the connections, and boom, done!
The damn thing keeps switching to temperature, date, and what I think may be the light-level for some reason. Took me half an hour to figure out how to un-set the alarm. But now I'm happy, I've got a nice big clock right where I want it, and for about 45 seconds out of every minutes, I can see the time, haha!

So it's like 10:40 PM, and for the past few hours, I've been feeling more under the weather than before.
I'm dizzy, I'm feeling queasy, headache in forehead in addition to the center of the noggin, generally unreasonably unwell, even for my current situation.
I'm considering going to bed a wee bit earlier than usual, and adjust my glasses. My smaller frame glasses. The ones that are for very close stuff, like books. Or like a circuit board I'm soldering stuff onto. Which I don't usually wear, and which are really, really unsuitable for wearing for anything other than stuff that's right in front of me.
And which I've been wearing since late this afternoon when I did my soldering. So at least I know it wasn't a weird reaction to medication or something ...

Fumes from the soldering? Alternatively, combination of frustration (see above), fumes, and wearing Coke-bottle glasses?

Reaction to fumes should have set in pretty much instantly. Lungs are the quickest way to the brain, pharmacologically.
Wouldn't call it "coke bottle", but I'm pretty sure it was having to focus on stuff through lenses set up for distances of maybe eight inches or under, while looking at stuff a foot or more away.
