Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

If you cannot Debauch because you get an IP blacklist error, try Debauching again time. It may work immediately, it may take a few attempts. It will work eventually, I don't think I had to click debauch more than three times. Someone is overzealous at our hosting company, but only on the first couple of attempts.

Some unpleasant miscreant was firing incessant database queries at our server, which forced the Legal Department of our hosting company, via their Abuse subdivision, to shut us down. No I have none.
All I can do it button the hatches, and tighten up a few things. Such as time limits on how long you may take to compose a post and hit Debauch! As of 24/01/10, I've set that at 30 minutes for now.

To restrict further overloads, any unregistered users had to be locked out.
How do we know who is or isn't an unregistered user?
By forcing anyone who wants in to Log In.
Is that annoying?
Yes. But there's only so much the Administerrerrerr can do to keep this place running.

... right after you're done with the sharks:

Norman Byrd on examiner.com wrote:Data indicates that there was a rapid temperature rise. There was also a sudden, precipitous plunge recorded -- a descent of 580 meters (1,902 feet) -- prior to the heightened temperature.
Right. That's an entirely ordinary, humdrum occurrence. Nothing to see here, move along.
Norman Byrd on examiner.com wrote:According to the experts, it is believed that shark was snagged by a much larger animal than itself and the rise in temperature is due to the Great White's being eaten, its body trapped in the digestive tract of some massive animal.
... it ate a 9 foot great white. It lives over half a kilometer, over a third of a mile, below the sea. And it's fucking hungry ...

I know, this is one of those Discovery Documentaries that needs to be taken with a bit of salt to counter some of the sensationalism in the story. However, when the narrator gets into the charts and following the patterns around the world, it does make one stop and look at the events mentioned, and the unusual damage to marine life that shows up. Weed through the crap, and there is an interesting story that makes you stop and go hmmmm...

Actually that particular "documentary" is full on fiction, a la War of the Worlds. They play a very brief disclaimer at the beginning, and caught a lot of flak when it first aired.

I found that video online, indeed. But I first heard it on Edumacation, Kevin Smith's science podcast. While that is not a credible source, far from it, I'm sure I recall they mentioned another source. To the googles!

EDIT: all I could find in a hurry were reports either directly referencing that documentary, or pointing at other reports that reference that documentary. Big old circle jerk. One proposed it was eaten by an even bigger shark (ha! they want us to believe that!). That would make sense. Tragic, mundane, humdrum sense, but sense. Darnit.

The "Story" is fiction. However, the charts and following around the unusual marine life attacks are based on factual charts and events. Those are actual charts, with the actual Current Changes caused by the various Natural Disasters such as the Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Typhoons etc. The documented cases of Atlantic Marine life showing up in the Pacific, and vice versa. Those are actual changes. Hell, they found a Greenland Shark, which is an Arctic Shark found between Greenland and Norway, usually under the ice pack in the freaking Gulf of Mexico.
