Trigger lock?

Post by calamari kid » Wed Jul 02, 2014 5:37 pm

Looking for advice regarding a trigger lock for a handgun my sister has obtained. Any particular types/brands I should look for or avoid? Is there any kind of sizing factor? I've only ever had long guns, and that's been a considerable number of years ago.

A lot of police/sheriff departments give them away to gun owners, especially if they have children.

Not that your sister shouldn't spring for one but trigger locks are pretty easily defeated. If the situation allows, a decent safe/lockbox might be more worth her/your while.

Yeah, it's more for casual deterrence. She's got 12 and 14 year-olds who know better, but I'd like to discourage curious fiddling about. She's also resistant to the idea of a safe as it's for self/home defense. She's out in the middle of nowhere, frequently alone, and has a creepy neighbor. It took me a bit of talking to convince her that she could work with a trigger lock. I'd also like to find a place to get her some formal training with it. I know the person she's borrowing it from showed her how to use it, but I have no idea what that "training" consisted of. While I grew up shooting with the grandparents and uncles who had a healthy respect for the safety aspect, she's never really been around firearms.

You down in Oly now? We should hook up for a beer or some such.

Now that we have kids we got a GunVault MiniVault for the need it quick gun. Everything else is in the long gun safe. Can open it in around a second, but have to be sure to remember to change the batteries on a regular schedule.
it's not as fiddly as a trigger or cable lock and you can keep a pistol loaded and ready in it if you want.

I've seen those, definitely on the radar as a possibility. How long do the batteries last in your experience?

Seems like about six months.
Mine sees very limited use, only gets opened about one every week or so to keep the combination fresh.

Mine go 12 months +. If you get the fancy version with the light inside, it also comes with a wall adapter, and the batteries become backup only.

What type of handgun?

I am partial to using a Bolt Action cable lock for my Semi-Auto when the munchkin is here. It feeds through the mag well and the slide can be closed on it.

For a revolver, I had the "through barrel" bar lock. Your key goes into the lock mechanism at the muzzle. The rod extends down the barrel and into the cylinder where a caliber specific block is located. This also prevents the cylinder from being rotated/opened easily. Insert key, unlock, yank rod, rotate cylinder and away we go. Just remember, you are 1 round short. (mine is the one with the red muzzle end where the key is inserted.)

The most common though, are the locks that enclose the trigger and guard itself.

The problem I have with the last one is that I have personally witnessed a loaded gun fire while trying to take off this type of lock.

Now for the $1M question. "Will she use the gun for defense, or be too afraid to pull the trigger?"

I will use my wife as an example. She will not use a gun to shoot someone. She knows it. Was put in a situation where she had the gun in hand and failed to pull the trigger. Fortunately, someone else came to the door and the invader fled, after taking the gun from her, before anything could happen directly to her. We have discussed this. I have taken her to the range. She is okay about shooting. Shoots rather well for someone who refuses to get proper training (read shooting/self defense classes) and she understands full well that if someone breaks in while I am not there, the gun cabinet is the last place she will go. If however, I am home, she is headed for the bathroom and the tub. She will however, beat you senseless with a Louisville Slugger, or stab you with a knife.

I believe it's a revolver, haven't seen it yet. You have a brand name or something for that through the barrel lock?

As to the million dollar question, that's part of my quest to get her some real training from folks who can properly get her head around that idea. Thinking things through isn't her strong suit, and she's already primed to reject family advice as my Ma went on a bit of an anti gun rant over the whole thing, and they've still got whole mother/daughter "don't tell me how to live my life" thing going on. Great fun.

I also rock the gunvault, biometric version. I have the micro and it fits my man-sized armament just fine. I get about 6mo on the battery, and the knowledge that my WAY too curious kid can't get in without one of my fingers (the keys are at work if i need them).
