Yeah, what a shocker when I opened my news feed. I suppose Orson finally recalled him from his mission here.

First celeb-type in a while I've been genuinely saddened by. I know he wasn't actually a poetry teacher or philanthropic doctor or Peter Pan, but he inhabited the roles so completely, convincingly.

Fuck. :(

Godspeed, Mr. Williams. Say "Hi" to George Carlin and Hunter S for the rest of us.

Amazing interview from a few years back that is almost uncomfortably personal and candid.

Having lost a few people recently to depression / drugs / suicide, this one really resonates.

I was startled by the depth of my reaction to the news. I realize now that he had been a part of my life since childhood, when I loved him as Mork and listened to his album 'Reality, what a concept' so many times. I was struggling with my identity as a male human who was not good at being tough or good at sports, and he provided me with a model for someone who was interesting and vital in a way that didn't draw on machismo. I knew I would never have his manic energy (who the hell does) but I was drawn to his use of humor, and the potency of the insight and unpredictability that it projected. Of course there was always a seriousness and a sadness visible right there too, and in that regard his passing comes as a sad surprise, but not some kind of shocking impossibility. It is and was of a piece with him. Farewell you wonderful crazy man.

I'd see him on occasion at the cool japanese toy store on Clement Street out in the avenues while he was living in the Lake District. I think he was always a big kid inside. I don't think it was a mystery to anyone that Mr. Williams used his humor to fight off demons (as most good comedians do). I know there is a general sadness throughout SF and the world. I guess we feel "one of our own" is gone and in a manner all too common out here. Godspeed Mr. Williams.

This makes me feel really, really sad. It just casts a pall over everything, the same everything which has been mostly in shadow for a while anyway. Fuck this.
