Got rearended in March (the 12th) and hit my head on the back of the truck. (Thanks Mazda and Ford for having short ass seat backs..) I have been mostly not riding and only just got back to work. Kid hit me at 30 while I was stopped at a light. Been dealing with oculo motor skills issues, though I think I would have rather been knocked dumb in the process, as sitting on my ass and doing little is horrible when the mind is still geared for working. Anyway, sorry if someone was looking for me or expecting a response, as I've been mostly off the computer. We'll see how it progresses over the summer, I plan on riding a bit this Saturday.

Anyway, this just highlighted the need for a helmet for me (in a state with no helmet law,) when a small thump to the head can screw up a whole bunch of things.

Yikes! Yeah, so many people think folks on motorcycles are nuts, but honestly getting on the highway in anything less than a fucking Abrams tank is taking your life in your hands.

As for helmets: I've always ridden with one. When I go back to DE (or anywhere with no law) and see folks without lids it makes me squeamish. While I'm not entirely a fan of helmet laws on principle, I think that anybody who rides without one is an idiot.

I've eaten shit hard a few times. Every single time I banged the shit out of my helmet, usually on the chinbar too (e.g., I walked away from a ~70mph lowside on the DC Beltway -- put it tires-first into the Jersey wall -- because I was totally geared up).

I go semi-squid when I'm riding my scooter around here, but I ALWAYS wear helmet and gloves. (My hands are fucked-up enough, can't afford for them to be worse, and medicine isn't quite as good at fixing machinery that delicate.) I recognize that not fully gearing up on the scooter is probably stupid, but pulling on all the kit just to run to the grocery store means I'd just take the truck.

Glad to hear you're still above ground, tho. That shit's scary.

I'd recommend seeing a neuro-ophthalmologist and an eye doctor regarding that oculo-motor stuff, but I suspect you already have, so I won't.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I have one of the top 5 in the country and his support staff. It's going to be a few months before the computer stuff is better, but the riding is back for now.

I spent 4 days in a hospital w/ a head injury complete with the experience of waking up to a nun asking if I wanted to talk to someone. Had some problems for a few years, and honestly, psychologically speaking, I've never gotten over it.

Humans are delicate. There's a lot that can be blamed on chance and there aint' nothin you can do about it. But the things you CAN do, you should do them. Hope you're well.
