Also, I don't actually have a bike. Yet. Please don't kill me. Actually, perhaps all of you can help me with my bikedentity-crisis? I've owned scooters in the past, although at this point am pretty sure it's time for a bike (no offense to scooter riders - I still love them). However, I am still not sure exactly what would make a good first bike for this transitional period. I know BMWs are popular here, but don't you techically have to be a 40 year old orthodontist to ride one of those?

You are thinking of Harley Davidsons. Actually ride whatever you want... you arent going to get much shit here no matter what.

Welcome, and thank you for the link to the Martian Cookbook. As an educator I'm constantly looking for lesson ideas and this is awesome for reading comprehension. Thanks!
Slash6 is right, ride what makes you happy, we could particularly give a wet slap what it is. You might, however, want to take some things into consideration first. What's your height and weight? What prior bike experience do you have (I realize you rode scooters, but trust me, they're very different beasts). And I completely recommend you take some sort of motorcycle safety class (hey, it knocks a few bucks off of insurance if nothing else).
BTW, I'm 36, have ridden a BMW for years, and do so because it's an extremely easy bike to work on (another consideration for you, do you plan to work on your bike? If so, what's your level of experience working on engines?), and have yet to wear an orange vest! [/b]

Definately take the safety course, every bit helps when dealing with the moron majority in their SUV's.

What bike to choose? You'll know it when you see it, you will know you are cool with out spending an hour sitting on it looking in a mirror. Ride what makes you happy.

Ride all the bikes you can, and buy the one that makes the biggest wet spot.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. You'll be happy to know I took a rider safety course (ABATE) a few months ago. I know very little about matenence but plan on taking a course on that too. Actually, I'm kind of looking forward to tweaking with the bike. I dunno, is that masochistic?

'sup Nega! Good to see you on the board! Me and this fella actually work together at the Triple Fuggin' I.

On the bike questions, a good thing to remember is that the coolest bike in the world is the one you have the key to, be it a Honda Passport 50 or a $100,000 West Coast chopper. Also, no bike is yours until you've modified it and crashed it (jetting carbs and dumping the bike in a parking lot count).
