Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

UTMC mix-tape (CD) swap?

Post by absent_carlo » Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:24 pm

I have a friend doing one and am a little jealous. The guildines would be as follows:

- 12 people sign up and are each assigned a different month (July to July)
- When it's your month, you create a mix-CD with cover art and send it to the other 11 people via postal mail, not electronic
- No rules on content
- Jewel cases are optional -- CD's hold up fairly well in the mail.
- You can leave feedback in the current thread

We could always adjust the numbers/schedule depending on interest. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions or if you want to sign up for a month.

Carlo

Why stretch it out over multiple months?

Why mail cd's at all? Grab the mp3's, zip em if you want, email them or host them somewhere, and people can burn their own if they want. Makes it nearly free or free for the participants.

Seems like a fun idea though.

i think that goes against the spirit of the idea. this way you get a new surprise in the mail every month. something to look forward to.

if you're going to do electronically, you might well just post a list of a few songs and leave it at that.

I like the idea of receiving something physical in the mail and it also lends itself to creativity in terms of cover art.

I think shrinking the timeline would probably make sense, maybe 2 people a month. I'll let the thread sit for a few days to guage interest and then put together a timeline. Anyone who wants in can PM me their address and I'll put together a master list. Cool!

I take back the comment about shrinking the timeline. In fact, i was away from the machine all day and regretted the comment the whole time.

If we can get commitments to stretch it over a year, then great. Why submit to the culture of instant gratification. A 'CD of the month' club is sweet idea.

Likely the monthly arrivals will serve as a steady stream of reminders. That, and we can play drums ominously outside your place at night, a-la King Kong, starting mid-April or so.

Okay, it looks like we have 11 total. I'll have limited access to the internet this week, but I'll check back in on Saturday and then PM the address/month list to everyone. I should be able to get out the July CD soon after. I have every address but Dave. I'm looking forward to this!

I got my CD in the mail today. I especially like Brother Ali - Forest Whitiker, A Whipser In The Noise - A Child, and Dosh - I Think I'm Getting Married. Selby Tigers - Droid is funny.

Overall a real cool disk that gives me some new stuff to listen to on the way to work. Thanks.
