Because the board got shutdown again because of a load of database, I had to fettle with the settings again.
As part of that, the server no longer stores what topics you have or haven't read.
IT IS STILL RECORDED!
But now, that information lives in a delicious cookie, rather than the forum database.

Upside: this should reduce the load of database.
Downside: if you use multiple devices to access the board, or you reject delicious cookies, you won't always have that information cookie. But the New Posts feature should take care of that.

Name that movie! (solved!)

Post by DerGolgo » Thu Aug 01, 2013 5:30 am

Right. Sitting at home, plague carrier and all that, now also with the lovely, lovely side-effects of high-power antibiotics, I thought I might see if, among it's many wonders, the internet could provide a movie I've only every once caught part of on TV over a decade ago. Which I had wanted to watch again for years, but basically forgot until today.
Problem is, I don't know the title. I don't even know the cast. I'm pretty sure there were one or two fairly famous faces in there. For some reason, I associated Walther Matthau with it. I am quite certain now it wasn't him, though, I've plowed through the imdb advanced search and couldn't find nothing that matched. But I'm sure there was some older chap in there somewhere, big-ish name actor, but he wasn't the protagonist, that was a younger guy.

I only ever saw maybe half of it, while metabolizing vast quantities of ethanol and ... other things ... after a night on the town. So my re

It was partly in black&white, but I'm pretty sure parts of it were in color.
I think the protagonist was a concert pianist of some sort. Who, somehow, in the middle of an important performance, traveled to the moon, where he fell in love. I think the scenes on the moon were in color.
I'm sure it wasn't old-old. I'd guess it was made somewhere between the late 1970s and late 1980s.
For some reason, I always associated "Arthurs theme", that song about "if you get lost between the moon and new york city" with it, because it sorta matched the plot. But it absolutely wasn't "Arthur".

Does anyone know the film I'm talking about, or did I hallucinate it?

Funny thing, I only watched this the other day. But that's not it.

The movie I'm looking for was mostly in black & white. Parts of it in color, I think. But mostly, if not after all entirely, in black & white.

Didn't imdb use to have have a search function? I swear I used it to find a movie before.

AHA, it does: http://www.imdb.com/search/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edited to add, the search function fucking sucks. Good luck.

Believe me, after what I did to it's search function, imdb and I should have had a cigarette. But it got me no and where. All it helped me work out was that, no, it apparently didn't star Matthau. Which might me significant. Or not.

Another thing I remembered about that movie: I'm pretty sure it involved a train. With some scenes set on a train, and some closeup exterior shots of that train.

Ha hA! The other day, I posted this question on the Criticker forums.
And, indeed, someone found it, I immediately recognized the title, I must have known it at some point.
It's Nothing lasts forever, starring Bill Murray and Dan Ayckroyd even.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087817/?ref_=sr_1

If you haven't heard of Criticker, go hence: http://www.criticker.com/
It's a movie rating website. Not a silly aggregator, but where users simply rate movies they've seen, from 0 to 100. The site will then use that to generate recommendations of films you might enjoy, based on how your past ratings match other user's ratings for specific movies. And it'll find users who's taste seems to match yours, so you can look over what they've rated to find something they've seen but you haven't and that might be good. And it's evidently a place where badass movie nerds hang out and can identify an obscure, artsy 1980s comedy from the very limited information I provided. It's not entirely useless.
