That was interesting. 4.6 earthquake at 7:12, in Maine, about 37 miles from here.

Ah, earthquakes in areas they don't usually attend. Reminds me of a 4.8 about ten years back, 60 miles form where I lived at the time. Woke me straight up, but I didn't know it was an earthquake until I saw the big public seismometer printout display at the university a few days later. My dog, you see, a pure bred herding dog with finely honed senses and instincts, a hairy alarm system really, he slept right through it, slept like a stone. Does it even count as an earthquake when the livestock ignore it?

I felt it, but it didn't occur to me that it was an earthquake. I was sitting at the laptop, when I felt it. My wife and mother-in-law were moving shit around in the kitchen, and I thought they had just dragged to table across the floor, which would make a good rumble. I did seem very rumbly and shook the house more than I would have guessed, but what the hell else would it be? The next time I peeked at FB, everybody was talking about the earthquake, and I said "Ahhh". You didn't feel it over there? I read that the epicenter was over in SW Maine.

Last decent quake in the Champlain Valley/Northern New York area was centered south of us, and did some damage in the ADKs. I remember being woken up by the hurricane lamp banging, mumbling about an earthquake, and going back to sleep. The pointy heads tell us, after every rumble, that if we ever have a quake over 6 (worst on record was a little over 5), it would pretty much level the area.

If you shake it more than twice, you're playing with it.
Not that there is anything wrong with that, its a healthy and natural thing.

Re: Shakey Shakey
All things considered, really, I probably get about as much, maybe more of a shake than a 4. something quake when a loaded truck speeds by my window.
Which, on the flipside, means that, although I cannot use it because of my f-ed up vision, I actually do have a motherquaking earthquake machine operator's license! Motherquaking boo-ya!

Re: Shakey Shakey
Since downgraded to 4.0.
My first reaction was to open the front door and look for the big-ass truck which just passed by. But that didn't make sense. The house is 125 feet from the road, and even fully loaded dump trucks don't rumble the house that much, for that long. It was a good 6 or 7 seconds of strong vibration.
The Northeast doesn't experience them much, so often the initial reaction isn't 'earthquake'. My father (90 miles from epicenter) looked to see if a tree fell down. My father-in-law suspected a chimney fire. His dog started barking like mad just before the incident.
