The important criterion is self-knowledge. A person who a) recognizes that are a little bit racist, and b) feels the need to correct himself and c) does something about it is cool. That person has recognized the issue, recognized that it is, in fact, a problem, and works to correct it.
Another person may not even recognize their racism, considering themselves to be cool and all while, even if not shouting out their racism, acting it out unconsciously. Another person may recognize they are a little bit racist, or more than a little bit, but doesn't feel the least bit bad about it. Maybe even feels good about it. Goes around rationalizing why they have figured it out and are justified in their racism. That person has seen the issue, but rather than recognizing it as a problem ignores it or even enjoys and/or is proud of it. That is morally utterly reprehensible, bigoted and the sort of thing that fuels racist violence. I would not desire to spend any time with such a person. Because I find it a moral requirement to tell someone like that what an ass they are, which gets old after a while.

But, at least, you can usually talk to them and maybe help point them in the right direction. Someone who would flip like that was already set on his course by and large, so it's no great loss and the true racist at least reveals himself for the world to behold.

whatever the debate, it didn't mean much 10 years ago or so, but now that racism has evolved into a form of social norm, I really like that this logo makes a statement. When I was a kid, we weren't hippies, but it was cool to consider that the world wasn't just "me me me more more more" and we used to mock the old farts that were scared by change and differences, we were proud to be a minority. But now I must admit that most of my relatives and old friends have become old farts scared of change and differences and they strongly want to remain a majority. so yes, fuck social norm and scared old farts, maybe not 100% but trying as hard as I can. people used to be ashamed to say that they were rascist, now it is considered a shame to say that you aren't, in real life as it is in media. I do not agree.

I know for a fact that this little guy , and the ideas he stands for, has caused the modification of the behavior of at least 1 poster on this forum.

That poster is me. I posted some venom not to long ago, directed at a ethnic group. I posted it, then went to bed. I awoke that night, realizing that through this forum I have met some good people who may feel they belong to the very group I spewed my misinformed hatred at.

As both the people who I may have hurt with my words are both in this discussion I would like to take this moment to formally apologize to both DerGolgo, and Xtian. Two people I have come to respect and like. I am sorry for the words I chose to use in describing the German peoples.

Xtian, I know you are form Belgium. But still, if you took offence, I am sorry. Also, I do not intend offence at this moment in grouping you in with the German.

Yes, people have differences, but race is not a difference based on which you may judge a person. You weren't making a joke when you talked about miscegenation, at least neither I nor anyone else here saw it as a joke, never mind getting it. Unlike xtians comment above, which is as evidently a joke and as evidently described so as possible (more nationalist than racist, though). You had ample opportunity to explain yourself, to tell everyone "was meant as a joke", you could have done that, but YOU did not. YOU chose to jump up and down pointing fingers at anyone who got angry with you, defending your right to be racist. YOU chose to go down this road, YOU chose not to put on the brakes, YOU chose it. Quite unlike your skin color, you had a choice, you chose, and now you are unwilling to live with the consequences of that choice. I have no TV and a tiny apartment, I live alone, am currently single and the only hobbies I have left I can still exercise, even though with quite a few limitations even there, are surfing the net and playing on the computer. Checking into the UTMC and firing off a quick reply? Less than a minute. Composing an elaborate reply with all the quotes and all that? Less than five minutes. Some people take an hour out of their day to watch a football game, I take less than that to speak out when hatred and bigotry are spewed forth. Which is a moral obligation, especially for someone with the sort of cultural heritage I've got. I'm not complaining, mind. The sky is blue, sodium is element 11 and this is something I must do. I'd feel bad, ashamed even if I didn't. It would feel like that bloody bird hanging around one's neck or not knowing whether one has turned off the stove before leaving the house if I didn't, so I do and feel better.

Oddly DerGolgo and I seem to both post based on our (often) diametrically opposed moral imperatives. The man thinks and I respect that. I don't much care if he or anyone else hates me. To use the cliche, I didn't come here to make friends!
