With some crude tools and metalworking skills, and some factory made parts of course, you can build an AK in a shed. This is news? I recall seeing a TV documentary about Mr. Kalashnikov himself, that included some shots of an Afghan blacksmith literally hammering a hammer for an AK on his anvil.
This is fairly good show though, I know I couldn't do it. This guy has skills and is creative, truly. Also slightly scary, mind, good thing he seems to have a sense of humor. But it's kinda the whole point of an AK that it can be built with minimal manufacturing sophistication, isn't it? I think I recall that that was one of the things Mr. Kalashnikov said he put much thought into after analyzing the StG 44.
But still, hats off. Even the most radical custom-bike builders wouldn't build their own engines from pretty much scratch (I know of only two three who do that sort of thing), so in a way, this is the boom-stick equivalent to building a bike with your own frame, tank and seat and fiddly bits. Considering that the guy is a hobbyist, not a guerrilla fighter in the mountains of central Asia whose life depends on doing this with even less materials to work with, so has no mortal incentive, it is kinda impressing, actually.

EDIT
Right, I read this, I do a GS for a "gay kalashnikov" and I find the kalashnikitty. I think, hey, piccini has that cat as his avatar, here is an image of it holding an AK, while cheap and low-brow, a bit ugly even, it would be funny to post this up as a contrast to his comment. Only after posting up of which I realized that, no, piccini's avatar isn't just the kitty but the same kalashnikitty I had found on google. Somehow, I had totally and utterly blanked out the AK. That's how common these things are in the world, they're like graffiti or utility boxes, we, or at least I, stop noticing them.
I think I must point out at this point that I've only ever seen any Kalashnikov in pictures, still and or moving. I think I may have once been in a museum that may have had one, but don't remember whether they actually did. They did have a submarine and a Starfighter jet and a V2 missile, so I was too busy to pay attention to little stuff like, you know, weapons. Oh, wait...ah, nevermind, I have the dumb today.

Also, I just read my previous post and realized that I know of at least three custom bike builders who also build their own engines from very nearly scratch, maybe four (does making a v-twin into a single count as building your own engine?). But considering how many people don't make their own engines for their custom bikes, I don't think it diminishes what this guy made.

Yuyp...i recall a national geographic from the 70's that had an article in it about the NW territories of Pakistan (Khyber pass) and they had all these pix of these turbaned dudes in little shacks full of files, hammers and anvils who were fabricating--from scratch, all sorts of nefarious looking full auto assault contraptions.

Guy had one good point..you can run an AK over with a tank and still bring it back with some handtools...but an M-16? just not.

Was it this one?

I once heard that AK type rifles are the single most common human artifact in the world, no other machine has been made in equal numbers. Now, I know that can't be true, after all, Zippo shipped it's 500 millionth lighter about ten years back, and only 100 million AK type rifles are estimated to exist. But apart from perhaps the 105 million shipped iPhones, which, unlike the AK, will be discarded and destroyed/recycled within a few years, and maybe some commodity ICs like the 555, which can expect a fate similar to the iPhone, I can't think of any complex device other than the AK to hold second place. You'd probably get into the territory of Coca Cola bottles looking for stuff that is more common.
It's literally the "human gun". If we ever meet aliens, and they talk among themselves about human weapons, they'll think of the AK first and foremost.
A bit weird, though, if not a bit depressing, isn't it. If you ask people to sum up civilization in as few works as possible, they'll probably mention Beethoven and Michelangelo, Newton and Einstein, the internet and the moon landing. But which tangible, specific items do we make more off than any other? A cigarette lighter and a gun. Truly, it's a very good cigarette lighter, reliable, functional and pleasing to use, and probably the single most favorite gun of any revolutionary, guerrilla fighter or rebel, as reliable, simple and cheap as it gets, an equalizer among equalizers. I think this doesn't say anything particularly pretty about us as a species, though.
But, well, the truth is rarely pretty. We are self-destructive and violent. A cigarette lighter and a gun? Quite appropriate, really. But no less depressing.

zippos and aks? I think it sums the species as a whole pretty well--self-destructive and aggressive! lol

As to the vid, interesting and yes it touches upon what the NatGeo was telling 30-40 years earlier, before the russian war in neighboring Afghanistan--they make their own guns from scratch, altho it looks like that might be waning a bit nowadays what with all the foreign supply amply meeting demand.

When i was in college one of my best friends, who i met at the stable where i kept a horse, was a pakistani plastic surgeon, also a rider, and a pashtun from the NW frontier. He was from a family/whatever that was pretty highly placed. One of his kinfolk that came to visit, and whom i met, was a paki general who ran a district with a mountain cavalry unit--which still used some horses for recon, patrol, etc. I still have the gold embroidered prayer hat (takiyah) he gave me but i haven't seen him for 30 years. He sure had *no use* whatsoever for the southern pakis... lol He was relatively non-observant but still submitted tio an arranged marriage--i remember when his new wife arrived--she was as much a stranger to me as to her new husband!--it was first time he had ever set eyes on her. very strange...

we've been eating, drinking, fucking and killing since we came out of the primordial oooze. Frankly, I'm surprised that killing is illegal since, well, we sure do a fuck ton of killing. All the laws against killing do not seem to stop the killing. All the "peace" movemements don't seem to stop the killing (some would argue they often give rise to more killing).

That said, the shovel AK is an inspiration to making a good killing tool out of a shovel! I loved it!

The next logical step is , just like BSA and FN, to build a motorcycle with your bare hands from a shovel. why waste your time on a gun when you can ride your own bike.

Sure. When people aren't shooting at one another, you know, in one of these pesky "peaces", you've got all that machinery and highly skilled people just standing around...what the hell else are you going to make?
BSA went that road and got out of the gun business entirely, from what I understand, as did Royal Enfield, also.
FN, they sorta went back to guns and then stuck to their guns. But in days gone by:

In Germany, as they would, gun makers stuck to their guns to begin with, it seems.
But NSU did start out making knitting machines, and with the gun makers not interested in motorcycles, had a big old field to play in.

I've fired their rifles, great stuff if you need to kill a lot of guys, good to see they put the same care into something positive at one time. Enfields too, now that I think about it, and with a high chance they were actually made by BSA. Funny.
My bike's factory made war materials too of course, but I kind of dig that they were a piano company before and after the war and turned their machine tooling to making motorcycles.

Indeed! It seems that every gun associated blog or internet community has this thing for "liberals"/Obama/Socialists etc., which has nothing to do with gun ownership. It's very tiresome to read through such dreck.

An idea occurs:
Form a new gun-owners group. With shooting competitions, a monthly magazine full of gun porn and useful tips for cleaning your gun, little membership cards and bumper stickers and all that.
Call it "Armed Socialists of America" or something. Make sure to design pro-gay-rights, environmental and Obama-supporting propaganda material.
The NRA should basically explode at the thought, shouldn't it?
Just don't get tempted to take it further and form a militia, like the opposite of the Michigan Militia, declaring to protect the impending UN invasion troops from that guerrilla warfare. These militia fucks might actually start marching to war.
